Notepad++ is a tabbed source code editor and Notepad replacement with a customizable interface. Includes source code "folding", allowing users to quickly reduce and expand sections of code to see the overall document. In addition, it features multi-language syntax highlighting, auto-completion, Perl-compatible regular expression search/replace, macro recording and playback, document map etc.

A host of additional functionality is available via the plugins admin view, including tools for file analysis, programming languages, viewers, calculations, user interface and many more.

Alternatively, Notepad++ Portable and the outdated X-Notepad++ clean the local folder.

Process Explorer is an advanced task manager. It is an indispensable tool for both beginners and power users. I use it all the time to kill tasks that refuse to be killed, or find what which processes are still holding on to a particular file or DLL so it refuses to be deleted.

Alternatively, Process Explorer Portable is also available, which is stealth.

7-Zip is an archive manager that can view and create a wide variety of formats. The program includes folder favorites, optional two-pane view, checksum calculator, file split/combine capability and more. Individual archives can be created with high speed or high compression settings, update options (including update, add/replace, synchronize), split volumes and more. Archives can be secured with standard zip or more secure AES encryption.

Although the official archiver for the open, high-compression "7z" format, the program also supports the creation of multiple formats including ZIP, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR and WIM. It will extract a long list of other formats, among them RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, RPM, VHD, VMDK etc. Even more formats are supported through third-party plugins. Supports many world languages.

Additionally, to use alternative toolbar and file icons, 7-Zip Theme Manager is available.

7-Zip Portable is a wrapper from PortableApps.com, auto-detecting 32 or 64-bit automatically. Alternatively, X-7zip is also available.

There is also a 7-Zip standalone console version.

CCleaner is a feature-rich system optimization and privacy tool. The program cleans unused, temporary and log files from your system, as well as traces of online activities such as Internet history and flash cookies. The program contains startup controls for Windows, major internet browsers and context menu entries. Includes a separate registry cleaner, duplicate search, system restore tool and can wipe both deleted files and drive free space for security.

A 64-bit version is available (within the folder). Monitoring functions are only available in the pro version.

Additional cleaner rules can be using an unofficial set of community-developed set. It should be noted that many of these rules are alpha and the developers will not provide support for these rules, a thread in the users forum is dedicated to supporting the add-on rules.

foobar2000 is an audio player with low memory footprint and native support for most popular audio formats. It includes CD ripping, format conversion, replay gain, audio normalization, equalization and more. Playlist display and keyboard shortcuts are both very customisable. Additional functionality available via a wide variety of plugins.

The program can edit song tags (album and song name, number, year etc.) based on the FreeDB Internet database and even rename the original songs based on these tags. A file format conversion tool is available, but must be enabled with external downloads. Can even fix some MP3s with corrupted file headers.

Vivaldi is a customizable, tabbed web browser based on the same engine as Google Chrome. Its appearance and capabilities can be extended with themes and extensions. It features a bookmark manager, speed dial, notes, custom search engines, sessions, tab stacks, web panels, mouse gestures, keyboard shortcuts, user interface scaling, adaptive interface color and much more.

Cross-platform with clients available for Mac and Linux.

Audacity is a multi-track sound recorder and editor with support for most audio formats and sophisticated effects such as noise removal and studio reverb. Users can record live audio, compress or convert file types, as well as cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.

GitHub user clsid' fork of Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a lightweight player with broad format support. It includes keyboard shortcuts, audio/video controls, a web interface for remote control and more. The program is derived from Media Player Classic (MPC), a media player that mimics the interface of Windows Media Player 6.4, and adds support for EVR rendering, H.264 and VC-1 video hardware acceleration, bugfixes, additional languages, decoders and more.

Note: this is a fork of the original version that ceased development in 2017.

Blender is a powerful, integrated 3D creation software suite with character/solids modeling, animation, rendering, rigging, shading, motion tracking and post-processing tools. It lets users create high quality 3D graphics, movies and replay real-time, interactive 3D content. Its features can be extended with a variety of plug-ins, scripts, templates and more.

Cross platform (Mac, Linux). The program has been used for a wide variety of functions, including VFX, video edition, modeling etc.

Milkytracker is a cross-platform tracking software based on Fasttracker 2 for creating and playing music. It supports the module music formats including 669, AMS, AMF, CBA, DIGI, DSM, FAR, GDM, IMF, MOD, MDL, MTM, MXM, OKT, PLM, PSM, PTM, S3M, STM, ULT, UNI and XM.

Exports to XM, MOD and WAV formats and comes with a built-in sample editor.

Note that although development is ongoing, the Windows version has not been updated since 2013.

KeePass is a password manager that helps you store and manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk. You need only remember one single master password to unlock the whole database, which is encrypted using AES and Twofish algorithms. The program includes a strong automatic password generator, expire dates, customized icons and categories etc.

Note that available plug-ins may not be portable.

The program supports a host of different audio functions including Internet radio, podcast search/download/manage, playlists, CD ripping, Last.FM, Soundcloud, device sync and much more. Audio functions include gapless playback, high-end and surround sound audio, volume and EQ controls.

SumatraPDF is a lightweight, tabbed document reader for a variety of formats. Includes a wide variety of views including table of contents, rotation, facing pages, book view (2 pages side-by-side), full screen and presentation mode. Includes support for bookmarks, command-line arguments, hotkeys, and more. Additionally, SumatraPDF can function as a portable browser plugin. Supported formats include PDF, eBooks (EPUB, MOBI, FB2/FB2Z, PDB, TCR), Comic Books (CBZ/CBR/CBT/CB7Z), DJVU, CHM, XPS, TXT, images (JPG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, J2K, WEBP, TGA) and PostScript documents (PS/EPS, AI, PRN - requires Ghostscript).

Alternatively, Sumatra Portable adjusts recently used and most used file paths.

Process Monitor displays both file system and registry activities in real-time, combining the features of FileMon and RegMon. Additional features includes live changes (autoscroll), non-destructive filtering, comprehensive event properties such session IDs and user names, reliable process information, full thread stacks with integrated symbol support for each operation, file logging etc.

Alternatively, Process Monitor Portable is also available, which is stealth.

OpenMPT (Open ModPlug Tracker) lets you to create and play back music on your computer. The program supports up to 127 tracks/channels, VST plugins/instruments, and has ASIO support.

Abykus is a spreadsheet program designed for business and scientific applications. It combines object-oriented functionality with traditional spreadsheet operations, allowing you to store multi-value data types (such as arrays, matrices, and tables) in a single cell.

Abykus does not use the “A1” cell naming convention (used to reference other cells). In Abykus, a cell address is enclosed in brackets. The row and column position are each represented by an expression that has a numeric value, and are separated by a comma. This new notation makes it possible to create dynamic (indirect) cell addresses within expressions that can automatically reference different cells, as values on the worksheet change.

Includes import/export of CSV, TXT, and DIF files; load up to 32 worksheets; 3D cell addresses; more than 190 functions; templates; C-like Script Language; statistics wizard.

Note: Recent versions of Windows do not by default support .hlp files. But Universal Extractor can decompile an RTF document from the Abykus.hlp file.

CarotDAV is a simple client for many remote file storage services including AmazonCloudDrive, Box, DropBox, GoogleDrive, Hubic, iCloud, OneDrive, OpenStack Swift, SugarSync and as well as WebDAV, secure FTP, and IMAP. Supports various view settings including detail, small/large icons, drag-and-drop interface, file transfer progress window (with speed listings) and a variety of sorting and grouping options. Allows for multiple instances to connect to multiple different services, but doesn't yet support transfers between them.

The program includes a WebDav server.

Includes dynamic encryption and decryption, automatic file-splitting (e.g. OneDrive's 25 MB file size limit) and doesn't store passwords in plain text if a master password is set.

Listary is an enhancement that allows you to quickly search almost any listing in Windows by simply typing your search terms. The program will pop up a small, semi-transparent window in Explorer windows (including open/save dialogs), Task Manager, Registry Editor and even directly on your desktop. The program works with almost any application with a system-generated list.

Although some programs will automatically jump to the first letter you type (a find-as-you-type feature of Windows Explorer), you must type quickly for more than one letter and cannot see your output. Listary brings a long-time feature of Linux to Windows, letting you enter whole words and type slower with automatic changes. Additionally, it allows wildcards and has the ability to edit your input with immediate results.

Advanced features include hotkeys, autocomplete, blacklists, favorites, a customizable window. Note that the program contains many "pro"-only features, but the program is very functional in its basic version.

Everything is a powerful search tool that locates files and folders by file name instantly, and includes an FTP and Web server interface. It also can search files by their contents. Unlike Windows search, Everything initially displays all files and folders on your computer. You simply type in part of the desired file name to limit what files and folders are displayed instantly. The more you type, the more specific the list becomes.

Note that the instant-search capability only works on NTFS/ReFS-formatted drives and only uses file and folder names in a file index. The program can separately catalog non-NTFS/ReFS and network servers for searching on a schedule.

Wavosaur is a fast and easy multi-audiowave file editor created for editing audio clips, sound design, mastering, managing and recording. The program is compatible with VSTs and capable of using them in real time to listen to effects-processed audio. It can also monitor audio ports and is MIDI-controllable.

Features include ASIO support, import (MP3, aiff, raw binary, au/snd, ADPCM and so on), MP3 export, statistic/analysis tools (2D/3D spectrum, real time oscilloscope), process tools (resample, bit-depth convert 8, 16, 24, 32 bits, pitch shift, vocal removal, etc.), batch processing and more.

NTFSLinksView shows you a list of all symbolic links and junctions in the specified folder, and their target paths. Microsoft Windows uses symbolic links and junction points of NTFS file system in order to make changes in the folders structure of Windows and keep the compatibility of applications written for older versions (pre-Vista). The program is useful for both diagnosis around linking issues and developers seeking to use symbolic links in their tools.

mp3DirectCut is a small tool for editing MPEG audio directly. You can remove parts, change the volume, split files or copy regions to new files, all without the need to decompress your MP3 into PCM/WAV. This saves work, encoding time and disk space. In addition, there is no quality loss to edited files.

XMPlay is a skinnable audio player that plays all major audio formats and includes gapless playback, effects, equalizer, net streaming. More features are available using plugins, including visualizations, more format support, cover art and more. Note that the library and playlist will not work as you change PCs.

Can play MP3, WMA, M4A, OGG and more, as well as output to WAV, MP3 OGG etc. (via external encoders).

Alternatively, XMPlay is natively portable but does not automatically adjust library and playlist paths: download the ZIP package, extract to a folder of your choice and launch xmplay.exe.

TablePro is a simple versatile database for the home and office, with fast and powerful search options, the ability export to various formats, a print, sorting on all fields, adjustment of the user interface, very fast loading and processing of huge quantities of records. The primary use of this program is for storage of telephone directories, tables of employees and clients, edit files, cataloguing of DVD videos, CD music, and book collections, price lists, LOG-files, files of statistics, etc.

Resonic is an audio player and browser / directory player, built around the use of a file waveform to visualize the audio. The program is designed with speed and large collections in mind. Visualizations include standard waveform, multi-channel audio and frequency analyzer.

Supports all major audio formats, including 64-bit float and multi-channel.

Miranda IM is an extensible, customizable instant messenger client supporting Facebook, Gadu-Gadu, Jabber, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo and more. The program can support more protocols via an extended plugin system to include Netsend, IAX, Tlen etc. and an add-on system can add other features such as skins, an RSS feed reader, weather alert, world clock, secure messaging etc.

Note: it is no longer maintained, but its fork Miranda NG can be used instead.

Alternatively, Miranda IM Portable is another portable version.

OSFMount is a collection of virtual drive tools that allows mounting local disk image files as a drive letter, RAM disks and mounting CD or DVD images (for simplicity or speed). Supported image types include IMG, DD, ISO, BIN, NRG, SDI, AFF, AFM, AFD, VMDK (used by VMware), VHD (Virtual PC) and more.

The program is ideal for machines without a CD/DVD drive and, as most images are bit-for-bit copies of disk partitions, many programs will treat them as the real thing, enabling programs that require a program disc. For disk images, the program can give access to these files without booting or other required visualization software. RAM disks have a variety of uses including high speed caches, programs with frequent/intense disk reads/writes and some database applications.

Command line tools are also included.

Note: The developer warns: "it is recommended that 64-bit Windows is used when large disk image files are to be mounted."

It will automatically download metadata such as release date, publisher, descriptions and artwork from thegamesdb.net. Out of the box it supports DOSBox, ScummVM, Steam, and various console emulators that support launching the game from the command line such as Dolphin, Snes9x, Project64, etc.

DOSBox and ScummVM is included in the installation.

Blumind is a lightweight and powerful mind mapping tool. It features multiple document editing, multiple export formats, and layouts from org charts, tree, and logic views.

WaveShop is a fast and lightweight audio editor, which despite its name supports lots of different audio file formats, including MP3, FLAC, OGG/Vorbis, and AAC/MP4. The program is bit-perfect, meaning uncompressed audio samples aren't altered unless they need to be; editing a portion of an audio file only affects that portion and the rest of the file remains untouched. Cut and pasted audio blocks won't modify their contents. This is especially useful for patching a finished master without corrupting its dither. Other features include unlimited undo, peak and RMS analysis, normalizing, fading, audio generation, and more.

Note that the author recommends running the 64-bit version (if you have 64-bit Windows) as it can load bigger files without running out of memory.

Alternatively, WaveShop Portable automatically switches between 32 & 64-bit and portablizes paths. X-WaveShop is also available.

Hokrain is a lightweight, fast audio player that allows you to present tracks as waveforms to make file seeking easier. It is designed to be lightweight, fast, and compatible with most popular formats. The program is also built with keyboard controls in mind for quick, transparent controls.

Universal Extractor allows you to extract files from a wide variety of archive files, including ZIP, ARJ, LZH, as well as MSI and EXE files created using various installer packages (such as Nullsoft, Wise, Inno Setup, etc). Useful for testing apps for portability because you can extract files directly from installer packages without having to go through the installation process. Note that the original developer no longer updates the program so some manual updates may be required.

Alternatively, an unofficial version with the latest-and-greatest internals is available (on Lupo's PenSuite site).

Junction Link Magic offers an easy interface to add, list, modify or remove junction points on NTFS filesystems. A junction point (also known as a reparse point) is works like soft links on Unix filesystems. It allows for a folder to be grafted into another folder on the same local computer.
