I have been using FreeCommander for many years and it is, simply, outstanding. To not have a real file manager is a misfortune; to be without FreeCommander is to be handicapped. Over time I have introduced many new users to FreeCommander and the results are always the same after several weeks of use - fascination that they ever managed to function with that Windows File Explorer thing. I had moved to FreeCommander when the old Xtree/XtreeGold file manager was no longer functional in Windows, and other file managers were not handling the complex file management work regularly encountered. At first, the two default panes in FreeCommander seemed odd. Though one pane can be disabled or hidden, dual panes grow quickly on the user until one realizes - wait, how can anyone function with a file manager that has just one pane? |
Multi Commander is a customizable, feature-rich and multi-tabbed file manager with a dual-pane layout. The program includes the standard file manager features with the ability to browse a variety of resources including local hard drives, network servers/shares, system registry and FTP (with SSL/TLS Support). Available tools include quick search, file verifier, splitter, audio, picture, clipboard, permissions and many more. The program can browse many archive formats like folders on your system (zip, tar, gz) as well as manage/open other formats (7z, RAR).
Includes intelligent functions that allow you to do advanced tasks with ease such as auto-unpacking, auto-sorting, internal file type associations, a powerful scripting engine for automation and command-line field.

MultiCommander has a bug in log into other directories. I could not log into directories reliably. =( Check the directories you enter with MC!

7-Zip is an archive manager that can view and create a wide variety of formats. The program includes folder favorites, optional two-pane view, checksum calculator, file split/combine capability and more. Individual archives can be created with high speed or high compression settings, update options (including update, add/replace, synchronize), split volumes and more. Archives can be secured with standard zip or more secure AES encryption.
Although the official archiver for the open, high-compression "7z" format, the program also supports the creation of multiple formats including ZIP, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR and WIM. It will extract a long list of other formats, among them RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, RPM, VHD, VMDK etc. Even more formats are supported through third-party plugins. Supports many world languages.
Additionally, to use alternative toolbar and file icons, 7-Zip Theme Manager is available.
7-Zip Portable is a wrapper from PortableApps.com, auto-detecting 32 or 64-bit automatically. Alternatively, X-7zip is also available.
There is also a 7-Zip standalone console version.

This program still supports SMB 1.0, which is no longer supported by Windows 10. Very useful if you have older devices and don't want to make your Windows 10 insecure by re-enabling this protocol. |
SFV Ninja allows you to check the integrity of any number of files. After running on a file list, the program can then check all files on that list, with the option to only verify/update only newly added files. The program can recursively scan/generate a folder for files and load them all at once, using relative paths whenever possible.
Useful to quickly checking system files or archives for modification/corruption. Supports many commonly-used hashing algorithms listed here from fast/simple to slow/secure: SFV (CRC32), MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-256.
