UltraSearch Free v3.0 Updated

webfork on 18 Oct 2020
  • 36MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 28 Sep 2020
  • Suggested by guinness

UltraSearch Free is a feature-rich search tool that searches thousands of files almost instantly. File name searches narrow as they are typed, as well as with wildcards such as "*.txt". Additional information like file size and last change date are present, as well as access to Explorer's own context menu.

The program also includes non-indexing, slower file content search is available that will look inside files, including a variety of Office (DOCX, PDF, PST, ODT) and compressed files (ZIP, 7Z, RAR). It is recommended that you provide a smallset set of files to check e.g. ext:DOCX content:portable to look for the word "portable" in MS Word files.

Other search options include AND / OR operations, regular expressions, a custom exclude filter for path, files, parent folders, etc. and results can be exported to text and CSV. A "pro" version of the software is available with additional features.

NOTE: The latest version of the program is 64-bit only. Please post in forums if you have a copy of the 32-bit version.

I was testing some alternatives to HDDB and this was listed as an alternative.

I briefly tested this and it's a memory eater. Uses around 500MB RAM and used a lot of disk I/O on first boot.

Stick to HDDB or Everything.

I download v3.0 x32 using direct link provided here (https://downloads.jam-software.de/ultrasearch_free/UltraSearch-x86-Free-Portable.zip) and it writes to file: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\UltraSearch Free\MainForm_RibbonOptions.xml.
If you move this file "MainForm_RibbonOptions.xml" to app's folder it will be used from this location and so UltraSearch free will become full portable!

update: I just found that link https://downloads.jam-software.de/ultrasearch_free/UltraSearch-x86-Free-Portable.zip (for the x32 version) is NOT valid any more!!!

@art: thanks, it looks like the program went 64-bit only. Entry updated.

Everything v1.4.1.992 Updated

  • Released on 19 Sep 2020

Everything is a powerful search tool that locates files and folders by file name instantly, and includes an FTP and Web server interface. It also can search files by their contents. Unlike Windows search, Everything initially displays all files and folders on your computer. You simply type in part of the desired file name to limit what files and folders are displayed instantly. The more you type, the more specific the list becomes.

Note that the instant-search capability only works on NTFS/ReFS-formatted drives and only uses file and folder names in a file index. The program can separately catalog non-NTFS/ReFS and network servers for searching on a schedule.

In case it does not remembers sort order, you have to edit 2 lines in Everything.ini:

sort=Type
always_keep_sort=1

I have tried and used several search apps before and was not very impressed but as soon as I saw that this product was from NirSoft I knew I had to try it. NirSoft makes so many great apps that I use a lot, its difficult to say something new about them due to the fact that just about everything they make works great and is pretty awesome overall. One thing is 4sure the native Micro$oft search engine is close to worthless, so just about anything will be an improvement.

Bill, thanks for the feedback! I've never tested it on such a large amount of files, because I usually apply the "Pre-Filter" by size to speed up the search dramatically (e.g. > 2 MB). I'm quite sure this issue can be fixed by chopping the data to be analyzed into smaller portions. Will do some research and for sure fix it for v1.7 :)...
Best Regards
