I will attempt to post on application website but ...
"Always start minimized (To Tray)" option does not work.

I have not seen changes occur to the configuration file (AutoHideDesktopIcons.ini) for this setting.

I will also ask about command line option to start minimized.

donald on 2011-09-22 00:45

Please note the immediate response of the developer.

This is a very nice and handy piece of software from a very prolific developer.

I have only seen first rate software from this developer.

Neat little app. Uses around 1.0 - 1.5MB RAM. GUI is a little ugly like all SoftwareOK apps, but you'll probably want to start this in the system tray and forget it! :)

This is not portable by default; it needs an extra step. From the readme:

"By default, the TheAeroClock.ini will be created in the folder %APPDATA%/TheAeroClock

For portable use, please create or copy in TheAeroClock working directory the TheAeroClock.ini."

stisev on 2021-02-16 03:07

For any poor souls out there who can't figure this app out.

1. Create TheAeroClock.ini in the app dir or it will write to /AppData
2. There seems to be a longstanding bug that does not show the app in the tray
3. If you want to see the program options, launch the app twice (yes you can't make this stuff up - there's no right click options, lol)

Can't believe I didn't know about this app!

I was getting sick and tired of Windows going up or down in volume increments of 2%. Why can't we set the increments in Windows by default? Anyway, with this app, I can set the increment to 1% and also override the default volume media keys to use Volume2's defaults as well. Bonus is you can also use your mouse's scrollwheel on the taskbar to control the volume.

All that and it only uses less than 2MB of RAM and less than 0.2% of CPU when active. Greatly recommended!

Listary v5.0.0.2843

Andrew Lee on 7 Jul 2023
  • 8MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 14 Oct 2018
  • Suggested by Jacob125

Listary is an enhancement that allows you to quickly search almost any listing in Windows by simply typing your search terms. The program will pop up a small, semi-transparent window in Explorer windows (including open/save dialogs), Task Manager, Registry Editor and even directly on your desktop. The program works with almost any application with a system-generated list.

Although some programs will automatically jump to the first letter you type (a find-as-you-type feature of Windows Explorer), you must type quickly for more than one letter and cannot see your output. Listary brings a long-time feature of Linux to Windows, letting you enter whole words and type slower with automatic changes. Additionally, it allows wildcards and has the ability to edit your input with immediate results.

Advanced features include hotkeys, autocomplete, blacklists, favorites, a customizable window. Note that the program contains many "pro"-only features, but the program is very functional in its basic version.

Note: The latest version is no longer portable. This entry has been updated to reflect the last known portable version of the program.

Stick A Note v3.1.1

Andrew Lee on 6 Sep 2022
  • 357KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 20 Apr 2022
  • Suggested by I am Baas

Stick A Note is an unique note-taking program in that it connects to an individual application window. Notes move with the window and disappear when window is not in focused or when the program hotkey is toggled (Win+N by default). Includes available color and hotkey customization, and all notes are saved to the application folder as text files.

Useful for keeping notes on individual applications such as usability or beta testing, or for keeping notes on infrequent/difficult programs to serve as reminders for use.

Note: Some software changes the window title with program behavior, which will make Stick A Note think it's working with a separate program (for example, this happens whenever you type anything into the search box of "Everything"). Stick A Note's associated note will no longer be visible (though still saved to disk) until the window returns to it's previous state.

Works fine on Firefox if Title Bar visible, if not use Shift-Right-Clicking on Tab Bar (mine in on top) or Windows-Alt-Down. Also works with Thunderbird. Do not use Opera, but one of the three methods in description seems to work on every program I use, so give it a try.

Thanks JK. Great ruler for preparing basic scale drawings in MS Word etc. for DIY projects. I especially like the calibration facility, as I prefer to draw at a size that fits the screen space rather than be constrained to a fixed ruler measurement, so this is perfect for that. (Looked at PMeter, but it didn't seem to suit my purpose at all; nor did various others that were either too limited, irritating or had time limits.) :-)

Hi - I've been looking for a successor to the legendary Cool Ruler from FabSoft, which won't run on W7. Really, I need something that sits horizontally and vertically, measures in pixels, mouse/touchpad grab and move, AND allows me to put as many custom marks as I need.

Is this possible?

It's the last bit which is so frustrating. I've found ONE only which allows me to put ONE custom mark. I am getting quite frustrated that so many authors think I need all kinds of fancy goodies--but if I want a protractor or set-square, I will search one out! And it better have custom marks :[

I don't need colour pickers, magnifiers, diagonal placement, skins & etc. Even the "stay on top" is not truly necessary.

Gordon.

With the settings below this acts like a wallpaper changer, though you will lose desktop icons while running in this way.

photo height=-1
photo transparency=255
photo position x=0

Couldn't the author just name it correctly?
Its just a desktop picture gadget, a poor one.

Hi Ganamyde,

OW has few different features than widget, so a different name.
It works in Xp which do not have widget support, and also Win8. You are welcome to read features and feedback at the website (https://sites.google.com/site/overlapwallpaper/home) for more information. I will request you to use OW along with widget to get first hand experience.

Thanks donald for tips.

A mere seven years late, ...and counting....;-)

The 161 files included in the "tclocklight-040702-3.zip" package are mostly source modules kindly provided by the developer for the benefit of DIY hackers.

For basic execution, only the following files are required:

• TCLOCK .EXE 44544 09/07/2004 17:16 A--- tclock.exe
• TCLOCK .INI 1024 10/20/2016 15:09 A--- tclock.ini

• TCMENU .TXT 477 05/09/2004 21:53 A--- tcmenu.txt

All the same, a nifty, teensy configurable clock utility, sitting pretty in WinXP system tray...;-)

Only use number indicator, so changed icons from zip file from Num_on or off to 0.ico and 1.ico, left others in cube folder as is. If caps lock, etc. is on, original cube folder icons are used.

World Clock Portable v8.0

  • Suggested by Lyon11111

World Clock is a multi-time zone map-based clock that can show you the time around the world. World Clock has an easy to use interface letting you select up to 8 different time zones to display. You can select using the map directly or look up city and country names on each continent. An optional solar terminator and flags over selected countries are also available.

World Clock Portable is a version of the software packaged in the PortableApps.com format.

Category:
Runs on:WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8
Writes settings to: Application folder
Dependencies: Internet Connection
Stealth: ? Yes
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the self-extracting EXE and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch WorldClockPortable.exe.
What's new?
  • Added a button to the Control Panel for users to change the digital clock's 12-hour format for 24-hour format and vice-versa, as requested by many users. This is a major feature as the programming involved to do it was considerable.
  • Corrected a bug in Solar Terminator, one that prevented it from being disabled and saved as a preference.
  • Solar Terminator shape was reverted back to previous shape, as requested by many users. The current shape will not be changed any more due to requests, as this shape is the one most users prefer. This Solar Terminator shape is extremely accurate, but, for your information, is not 100% accurate, because it is impossible to calculate, predict and display the real Solar Terminator shape caused by the sun; however, it is close enough.
  • Implemented Solar Terminator, City Markers, City Flags and Digital Clock Format (12-hour and/or 24-hour format) to the Embed Tag feature, which means these features four features will be automatically included in the automatic generation of the embed tag according to the current user's preferences.
  • Reduced the month's name from, for example, "October 18, 2013" to "Oct 18, 2013", in order to save space in the Time Zone Window, because some month names are bigger than others.
  • Corrected a design issue in the desktop versions for PC and Mac, caused by Adobe Flash Player itself, which created space not used by World Clock and in another color different from the World Clock's default theme - Blue Theme. Now the Blue Theme has the same blue background color within the entire window's background.
  • Added several improvements to design, code and performance.

shnbwmn on 2016-03-16 06:43

If you just want the recycle bin in the systray area on your main PC, then another way is to add it via quick launch. Right-click taskbar, toolbars, add ... %AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch ... Unlock taskbar, untick show text/titles, tick large icons under view, lock taskbar. You can now drag items to this and they'll be added to the RB; right-click lets you empty it, and of course clicking it will open it.

Then you're free to remove that damned icon from the desktop. I know this isn't portable and of course it doesn't have the extra functions, but again, this is just if you want it in your tray on your main PC.

A few minor, but annoying, bugs (at least on my machine with winXP):
1. Minimization to tray doesn't work for console applications.
2. If an application terminates while minimized in tray its icon stays there and cannot be removed (doesn't respond to clicks) until you close WinRoll itself.
3. Applying an action to all windows using the Alt key doesn't affect certain applications and sometimes causes the system to become unstable (crashes some of them).

"Minimize to Tray" (#925), which is also written in Assembly and ultra-small, works better in this regard although it lacks the transparency and always-on-top settings.

MnX on 2013-07-17 23:30

I love this feature on my LXDE machine. I wish MS would do this and multiple desktops like on Linux. The copyright on this software is 2003-2004, obviously no longer supported. Although it IS buggy, the roll-up roll-down features work just the way I want, AND it works on my Win 8 machine as well.

The program allows you to move any window by dragging it from anywhere while pressing the ALT key, and resize a window by right-mouse-button-dragging it from anywhere while pressing the ALT key.

i also use rtvreco and like it much. i agree it is far better than this one. well worth the 'payware' price. it will do much more and find more windows than ptfb will and give user more choices what to do when it recognizes a window...

Morten on 2007-03-22 02:11

It doesn't actually help how much better the other product is as this is a "freeware" listing. The name "The Portable Freeware Collection" does not indicate the use of payware does it?

somejerk on 2018-11-27 19:48

RtvReco doesn't even exist anymore. gbj and Shodan are probably spammers who were trying to push the software.

PTFB does exactly what I need; it pushes the freakin button. It's great for one off tasks that have an unexpected error interruption.

When I need something more complex (like automating installers), I use AutoIt, which is also freeware.

FolderIcons v1.27

Midas on 10 Dec 2014

  • Suggested by M. Maltbia

FolderIcons helps you customize the icons of your file system's folders. It works by simply adding a desktop.ini file in a folder, then changes the folder's attributes. However, FolderIcons makes this process very easy. You can undo your changes, or recursively assign the same icon to a whole folder tree.

Does anyone know of a utility that can colour label files instead of only folders? This feature is default on Mac computers, and there *must* be something like it for Win as well - but I haven't yet found it.

Risk3 on 2007-01-24 22:39

Martijn, Check out http://xentient.com/

Allen on 2014-12-10 16:47

If you want to make this Permanent, put the icon itself into the folder that you are changing! In other words copy and paste the icon into the folder and then run the program and point to this icon as the one that you want to change the folder icon to. This way if you change a folder icon that is on a USB to something different and you plug into a different computer the changed icon will show.

CursorUS v1.9

CursorUS is a small application that eliminates the boundaries of your screen in the same way that many games do: they "wrap" the mouse over. In other words, move your mouse past the left side of your screen and it'll appear on the right side. Takes plenty getting used to but can be pretty handy. It is very customizable as well.

Don't use this in a multi-monitor environment. When you move your mouse to you 2nd monitor, it wraps & you can't get to it! It's also a major pain to get your task bar to pop-up if you have it on auto-hide. Other then that, it's a cool app.

iisys on 2008-10-18 11:56

Wow, this really is a nice app. It let's you really FEEL how small your screen actually is (or how big, if you've got a big screen :')). But that's not a bad thing, because with this app, there are no boundaries around that small screen.

Has improved quickly since it's release and now has pretty much all the features that you would expect to find in such a program. The addition of the magnifier and color picker in such a small application is a nice bonus. Can be a very useful tool for website design or any sort of graphics editing. One for the USB drive!

So sweet! I can only say that this program is so sweet, much better than other ruler software and free!

For me it's useless, as it loses all settings once you exit it.

Addendum.
I've tried the Free Alarm Clock proposed by Midas above, and it's clearly superior, the best of the lot in fact.

Thank you Mr. Hamataro! Nothing to add to it, nothing superfluous. At last i\I've found what I've been looking for.

just recently decided to have a software shutdown my laptop at a specified time.. this gem does it perfectly & more.. i love how i can control its appearance. thank you :-)

tomcat on 2014-09-14 17:52

Basically, a good little tool. But there’s room for improvement:

1 Help is written in a language not supported by my OS.
2 Readme contains gems like: “You can make up its face lovely with various options…. Defrost the lzh-file into a reasonable folder.”
3 I could only set one alarm, whereas I’d like at least 2 per day.
4 Some settings aren’t clear to me at first, e.g. “Alarm Mark appears Before xx Minutes”. I shall have to experiment.

Power Menu adds "Always On Top", "Minimize To Tray", "Priority" and "Transparency" submenus to all top level system menus.
