WinRoll allows you to make a window "roll up" into its title bar by right-clicking on the title bar. You can also send a window to the back, make it stay on top, minimize, maximize or close all visible windows as well as minimize to the tray area. In Windows 2000 and above, you can even make a window translucent.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: Windows registry. But given the nature of the application and the small number of parameters involved, I think it can be accepted as portable.
License: Freeware/Open Source
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch winroll.exe.

Among other amenities, Pitaschio (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2487, currently up to v2.26) provides "Minimize to tray" via right click on program's titlebar minimize button...

I love this feature on my LXDE machine. I wish MS would do this and multiple desktops like on Linux. The copyright on this software is 2003-2004, obviously no longer supported. Although it IS buggy, the roll-up roll-down features work just the way I want, AND it works on my Win 8 machine as well.

A few minor, but annoying, bugs (at least on my machine with winXP):
1. Minimization to tray doesn't work for console applications.
2. If an application terminates while minimized in tray its icon stays there and cannot be removed (doesn't respond to clicks) until you close WinRoll itself.
3. Applying an action to all windows using the Alt key doesn't affect certain applications and sometimes causes the system to become unstable (crashes some of them).

"Minimize to Tray" (#925), which is also written in Assembly and ultra-small, works better in this regard although it lacks the transparency and always-on-top settings.

@ Baas: lautrepay is presently still unable to update entries.
He needs some more postings (50) at the forum. His counter is presently at 41.

As archive.org pages can be available or unavailable at different times depending on which parts of their server farm are available, it may make more sense to have a different download option available. I've uploaded the original file (and source) to our SourceForge project here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/WinRoll%20Portable/winroll_bin-2.0.zip/download It'll be available in perpetuity and on the SourceForge mirror network of dozens of servers around the world.
