I still use & really like this program now using Windoze 10. I'm anal about my Desktop icons arrangement, and this program makes it so easy to line them up just as I want. Thanks to the maker for a program that I have used for a very long time across many different operating systems. Has always been flawless for me :)

It would be even better if DesktopOK didn't force an icon rearrangement with every resolution change -- in my laptop, a lot of those are temporary, resulting from user logon or the machine coming out of sleep state before, rerouting graphics to my higher resolution external screen. After some time it's galling to have to restore icon arrangement after every such hiccup. I've gone through all settings several times but up to now have been unable to disable this behavior.

FileZilla is a fast and reliable FTP client, including secure options SFTP and TLS. The program interface includes an easy-to-use tabbed window, drag-and-drop capability, bookmarks, remote and recursive file search, remote file editing and a managable upload/download queue. Internally, it supports connection throttling, keepalive, timeout detection, IPv6, SOCKS 4/5 and HTTP 1.1 proxy etc.
Alternatively, Filezilla Portable is pre-configured as portable and automatically adjusts paths, as well as X-Filezilla.
Cross-platform with clients available for Mac and Linux. For Windows XP, an older and unsupported version is available.

Having used it for many years, Filezilla has lost its way now in my opinion. The irritating pop up balloon on every successful upload is just one of the annoyances. The latest update seemed to corrupt something on my Windows and I was reduced to about one fifteenth of the normal upload speed. Going back to an ancient version hasn't fixed the issue and the portable versions are the same. However WinSCP works fine so it's that for me from now on. |
foobar2000 is an audio player with low memory footprint and native support for most popular audio formats. It includes CD ripping, format conversion, replay gain, audio normalization, equalization and more. Playlist display and keyboard shortcuts are both very customisable. Additional functionality available via a wide variety of plugins.
The program can edit song tags (album and song name, number, year etc.) based on the FreeDB Internet database and even rename the original songs based on these tags. A file format conversion tool is available, but must be enabled with external downloads. Can even fix some MP3s with corrupted file headers.
Windows 2000 users can download the last compatible version: 0.9.4.
Windows XP and Vista users, download last version from 1.5 series.

Great player, especially with a few tweaks. I use Meier crossfeed[1] together with Dolby surround emulation[2]. What this does is it spreads the sound out, as if you're listening to a live performance, and greatly reduces ear strain when listening with headphones (which I do 99% of the time). Other pluses are that it uses my own music directory structure, is very fast (opens in a snap), and it uses windows native look instead of someone's idea of a great skin.

@shnbwmn: FYI, Viper4Windows is a free general purpose Windows sound processor that includes similar tweaks, among many others... (V4W homepage appears to be having issues currently, but Softpedia has it: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Other-AUDIO-Tools/ViPER4Windows.shtml). Also available as Viper4Android. |
