Synopsis: VLC is a media player that supports a large number of multimedia formats. It functions independently of the system codecs, so this is the tool for you if you are tired of spending hours messing around with codecs simply to play a video file your friend sent you. It can also be used as a streaming server for delivering video in unicast or multicast mode.

Synopsis: KMPlayer is a audio/video player that supports a wide range of file formats, including AVI, MKV, MPEG, OGM, MP4, ASF etc. without any additional codecs installed. It also has full VCD/DVD playback functionality. In addition, it is able to play incomplete/damaged AVI files, or media files that are locked while downloading or sharing.

Note that this program may or may not be in compliance with one or more licenses.

How to extract: Download the self-extracting EXE and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch KMPlayer.exe. Then bring up the "Preferences" window, click on "General", and check "Store Settings to KMPcfg.ini". Synopsis: Media Player Classic looks like Windows Media Player V6.x, but it is not a me-too application. Beneath its classic look lies an extremely powerful media player. You can configure keyboard commands, configure/reorder/disable codecs/filters etc.

Note: There is another fork of Media Player Classic available called Media Player Classic - Home Cinema.

How to extract: Download the ZIP file and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch mplayerc.exe. Select View, Options, Player and check "Store settings to .ini file" to store settings in the application folder instead of the registry.

Unicode support: Yes. There are two versions of the player to choose from. The 98/ME version works on all versions of Windows but does not support Unicode. The 2K/XP version only works on WinNT and higher.
