Freebyte Task Scheduler v2.0

billon on 20 Dec 2019
  • 597KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 22 May 2011
  • Suggested by gdlm

Freebyte Task Scheduler enables you to start other programs automatically, periodically and at predefined times. It works well with other portable apps like backup software, disk defragmenters, virus scanners etc.

NOTE: Website is down, linking to Wayback Machine and Softpedia.

Category:
Runs on:WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10 / Wine
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: No
License: Freeware
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice
  2. Create an empty FBTaskScheduler2.ini file
  3. Launch FBTaskScheduler2.exe
What's new? Options:
  • Added: "Menu: Edit/Preferences"
  • Added: "Menu: Edit/Preferences/Confirm when exit program". Freebyte Task Scheduler by default asks for confirmation when you close the program. You can disable it here.
  • Added: "Menu: Edit/Preferences/Confirm before executing task manually". Here you can disable the confirmation dialog that appears when when you manually try to execute a task.
Settings:
  • The settings file format has changed. It is still an .ini file, but not compatible with the settings file format of version 1.0.
  • Added: "Menu: File/Import/Tasks from version 1.x", which you can use to import tasks from the old-style settings file (used in version 1.x).
  • Changed: the settings file, by default, is now located inside the Windows folder: "C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Freebyte\FBTaskScheduler\".
  • The name of the settings file has been changed to "FBTaskScheduler2.ini".
Log file:
  • Changed: the default location of the log file is now inside "C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Freebyte\FBTaskScheduler\".
  • Changed: the name of the log file has been changed to "FBTaskscheduler2.log".
  • Changed: the log file will always be stored in the same location as the settings file (see also the section on portability, below).
Portability:
  • If you want to run FBTaskScheduler directly off a USB stick (including settings file), then just copy the program's executable, the settings file and the log file to a directory of your choice.
When FBTaskScheduler detects the settings file inside its program directory, it will use that version (and it will not look for any data inside the "C:\Documents and Settings\..." directory). The program will also create or use the log file in the same location as where it found the settings file.
  • Tip: you can also create an empty FBTaskScheduler2.ini text file (inside the program's directory). If it finds an empty settings file, it will also use that.
User-interface:
  • Updated buttons for add, remove, edit and execute task.
  • The "Close" button has been removed.

Just heard about this program from Security Now podcast #564. Since both download links were dead the co-host mirrored the version [1] from Snapfiles.com on his own site for people to download.

Should I change the download link to this or the Softpedia.com link above? It would be nice to have a direct link imo.

[1] https://grc.com/doubledriver.zip

Midas on 2016-06-17 17:59

@Specular: the problem here might be the sudden popularity -- here's the message I get when trying to download from the homepage: "Error (429) This account's links are generating too much traffic and have been temporarily disabled!"...

Specular on 2016-06-19 15:06

@Midas: the host found and tested the program prior to mentioning on the show and noted the download links had been broken for a while, in addition to several users here for the past several years, so I think the site is just outdated.

A variety of secure erase methods are available including free space or whole-drive wipe using either basic (zero out / pseudorandom) or high-security standards (like DoD).

link to download and website appear dead?

smallhagrid on 2013-01-25 19:08

Lupo Pensuite has it - but there's no way to tell if it really can ONLY do file changes or not.
I have a single database file I update and use at home & work (because of my poor memory...), it is 50mb+, so if I've got to copy it whole it is a huge time-waster.
Has anyone here gotten this to just copy changes into the destination file ?!?
Thanks.

@smallhagrid: I don't know if this program has that functionality - I'd look to FreeFileSync http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1475 or Dsynchronize http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=719 here on the site.

Note: ADRC Data Recovery Tools has the annoying habit of opening its user guide on the web in the web browser on startup. This behaviour cannot be disabled. It is not as stealthy as phoning home without your knowledge, but can be irritating.

It doesn't produce a bit-stream copy (forensic safe). I restored a forensic safe image of a drive and then create an image with this software. I computed the hash values for the images, they don't match. I am albeit leary of this.

clement on 2010-07-25 10:07

I think to produce a forensic copy, you will need to connect the drive to a write block device. You can not use software this way to produce a forensic image.

dany on 2011-11-30 22:43

Note 2: apart from being irritating, it kinda defies the whole purpose of data recovery...
