DiskImage helps backup/restore partitions, entire hard disks, USB storage devices, floppy drives and CDs/DVDs to/from files. It supports ZIP compression (and custom compression method for data greater than 2GB), MD5 and SHA1 checksumming, built-in hex editor for sector editing, and various other tools like drive speed and seek test.

it looks very useful, but i keep getting this error "failed to open volume (any letter) offset: 0 size: (size of drive in bytes)

The features comparison matrix on the website appears to suggest that it can only save under 2 gigs of data, which is plenty for most flash drives, but not so useful for backing up an operating system.
