Portable Unison v2.13.15 New

webfork on 25 May 2013
  • 1MB (uncompressed)
  • Suggested by dasfx

Unison is a file-synchronization tool that allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts or different disks on the same host. They are modified separately and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other.

Unlike simple mirroring or backup utilities, Unison can deal with updates to both replicas of a distributed directory structure. Updates that do not conflict are propagated automatically. Conflicting updates are detected and displayed.

Cross platform (OS X and Linux). Portable Unison is a portable wrapper for Unison that writes settings to the application folder instead of the user profile folder.

Category:
System Requirements: Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: Application folder
Unicode support: Yes
License: GPL
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch PortableUnison.exe.

Note: a blank console window is always visible when you run Unison. This is explained on the author website.[/i]
What's new?
  • Revert to V2.13.15 and point download link to SoftPedia until a more recent portable verson of Unison can be found.

Hi. I've always run the regular Unison from batch files without needing this Portable version, but apparently installing the latest DOT NET and resulting MS updates to my Win7 causes the GTK DLLs to no longer load from the path (I was pointing to the bin under Portable GIMP).

One fix is to install the GTK runtimes directly to system32.

This PortableUnison launcher is another. It seems to works fine with an updated unison binary, as long as you also update the GTK bin folder with a newer runtime.

Note also that (perhaps as a result of the same updates), the unison executable is triggering UAC to launch within the administrator environment, which then causes drive letter mappings and the environment variables set by my batch files to no longer be recognized:

SET UNISONLOCALHOSTNAME=%COMPUTERNAME%
SET UNISON=%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\.unison

So I've created a batch file to set these (along with NET USE to re-map the drive letter to the share) and then launch the PortableUnison.exe. This batch then needs to be launched "as admin" to keep everything consistent.

Hope this helps others, and sure wish a clean updated version of this could be created by someone more knowledgeable than me. 8-)

You may be interested to know that I've made a portable package of a relatively recent version of Unison (2.40.16) available here: http://appstogo.mcfadzean.org.uk/index.html#file

Hope this helps some of you.

Much needed portable (both as in platform independent as in system independent) utility for advanced users. Softpedia download links is dead, but BigD has a working solution (after proper launcher batch script customization) at the link in the previous post. :)

SyncExp enables the synchronization of files and folders within a single PC or over the LAN. It uses an optimized file comparison algorithm that checks for the existence/time/date/size of files, with automatic activity log, progress report window and preview of action.

Note: Looks like the app homepage has become an ad landing site, so I have updated the download link to point to Softpedia, which still hosts the app.

By selecting "Only include following sub-folder" option, can SyncExpert compare files in added subfolders only ("Include sub-folder" option is selected). Files in deeper subfolders are not compared.

Does anyone have the updated support site? There's a request I have.

If you have a file on both the sync list and the delete list, then it won't sync the file, but deletes it instead. What I want to do is sync the file, THEN delete it. I was wondering how to get in contact with someone that could help me with this.

I use SyncExp for all my syncronizing needs, and one of those needs is syncronizing my data and then deleting it (if I'm on a computer that's not mine). It would be really cool if SyncExp could sync AND delete so that I could just make a task to sync and delete my data, and SyncExp would do both.

But, anyway, if "the right person" sees this, then I don't have to hunt for you, because you found me (but please do tell how I can get in contact with you, or tell me to post here if it works best for you). Elsewise, could someone point me to "the right person", so that I could send them this request?

The best way to contact me is at crossthei.thet@gmail.com if you have futher questions, or with the contact information of "the right person".

While I second the comments of shodan816 I would like to add that if I open 2 folders (via secondary channels such as SendTo, Open++, etc.) FreeFileSync always opens them with the "File time and size" settings despite I saved the "File content" comparison settings.

This (which IMHO is a plain and simple) bug is quite frustrating and what fuels the frustration even further is not having the option to manually start the comparison process, which starts automatically as soon as the folder pairs are loaded into the GUI.

So at every run I have to abort + change the settings (to the ones I actually saved originally) + restart the comparison (with the right settings)!

Since I keep noticing this issue version after version I am to second Midas' comment too ("...A basic error two versions in a row with no regard for user feedback...") and can only hope that the dev will visit this venue and read our comments before releasing another version with the same inconvenient features.

BTW, regretfully due to the somewhat "original/unusual" GUI I accidentally clicked a couple of times the "Synchronize" button (instead of the "Synchronization settings" one) and I would really love if the dev could offer us the option to enable/disable a (sort of safety) "Synchronize now?" (final confirmation) dialog.

Concluding, (if others reading this comment are in agreement) we should probably try to mass-convey to the dev at least (but not limited to) the request to add BOTH the "Compare now?" and "Synchronize now?" confirmation dialogs and also to make sure that the user's settings are observed no matter how the folder pairs are loaded into the GUI.

I learned that hard way that changing ANY of the Global Synchronization settings INCLUDING 'Deletion Method' and 'Error Handling' will reset any prior customized actions to default actions. Failing to realize this, I had unintentionally screwed up one of my backups. It was minor, but could have been catastrophic. Just a warning: pay attention to those little arrows, it could save your files!

Lesson learned: measure twice, cut once.

I just downloaded v2.65.0.b. I created 2 "test" folders one on C:\ with 5 folders with files and one empty on D:\ I then ran the snyc and the program completely left one folder out of the sync task. I tried several times with te same result. So, Make sure you check your Task! I tried the same Task with "FolderSync 2" and it worked perfect on the same task.

logear on 2013-04-29 14:20

v2.65 failed me too. Otherwise, all versions have been pretty reliable.

Looks and works well for me, but I understand it will not sync empty subfolders? Guess you could put a dummy file in the source subfolder though as a workaround?

spicydog on 2012-09-22 20:11

Did anybody found out how to make:

A) This app sync empty subfolders?

and

B) Exclusions stick?*

*(I added "-RECYCLER" and it is nicely excluded, but when I close the app and reopen it, the exclusion entry is gone!)

MiDoJo on 2012-10-24 19:59

Re: Above comments
A) As of Version 1.0.0 build 60 Empty Folders should work (see What's new Above)
B) to make exclusions stick create a task
