DesktopOK contains a host of beneficial Windows interface tweaks. The program can save the current icon view by resolution and make it easy to swap between views, showing all saved view formats in a list. Other tools include basic screenshots, the ability to force-close programs, color tool, volume and more:

  • Interface tools include reducing clutter with a minimize-to-tray by right clicking on a window close button, mouse hiding and ability to hide desktop icons after a period of inactivity (click on the desktop to make them re-appear). You can even modify default icon spacing.

  • Window management tools include scrolling any window that your mouse hovers over (not just what's in focus) and alt+drag (for moving windows without having to hold your cursor over the top bar).

System Requirements: Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. In this folder, create an empty text file and name it DesktopOK.ini. Launch DesktopOK.exe or DesktopOK_x64.exe.

Possible issues:
  • The program is in German: If not automatically set to the English, click the by clicking the flag in the lower left corner of the window for any of 24 world languages.
  • It saves to AppData: If you don't create an empty text file, it writes to %APPDATA%/DesktopOK/DesktopOK.ini. If you accidentally skipped this step, you can simply move this file over to the application folder.
Similar/alternative apps: AltDrag, ICU
What's new?
  • Minor changes / corrections for x64 OS.
  • Update of language files.

@nick: but does it maintain the the position of desktop icons? nope.

From initial tests, it seems to maintain the position of my desktop icons.

Works until I rebooted the machine. After a reboot, found all my saved desktop settings gone. Tried it more than once; happens every time.

Contacted the developer about this issue. Will post the response when I receive it.

The developer suggested downloading the new version (2.16). After installing ver 2.16, all my old desktop settings were displayed. It appears that the settings were saved in the previous version, but they weren't visible. Issue is apparently fixed now.

Works perfectly on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

DesktopOK 2.24 works perfectly for me on Win XP. It maintains positions of desktop icons (even after re-booting) if desktop property "align to grid" is selected. Efficiently small at 101K bytes. Desktop icons are saved to DesktopOK.ini file in the DesktopOK directory.

This has become a must-have utility for handling multiple monitors and the scroll anywhere function is increasingly necessary. Great desktop tweak.

I love this guy's lightweight and practical software so much that I've donated to him (very rare for me!). Many of his tools I see that this tool combines several of his others -- and my favorites as a trainer -- into one: AutohidedesktopIconsOK, AutohideMouseCursorOK, DontSleepOK, and others. Can't wait to try it.

I still use & really like this program now using Windoze 10. I'm anal about my Desktop icons arrangement, and this program makes it so easy to line them up just as I want. Thanks to the maker for a program that I have used for a very long time across many different operating systems. Has always been flawless for me :)

Midas 2017-04-04 12:44

It would be even better if DesktopOK didn't force an icon rearrangement with every resolution change -- in my laptop, a lot of those are temporary, resulting from user logon or the machine coming out of sleep state before, rerouting graphics to my higher resolution external screen. After some time it's galling to have to restore icon arrangement after every such hiccup. I've gone through all settings several times but up to now have been unable to disable this behavior.

MIKLO 2017-04-20 14:18

@Midas strange because I have used on laptops for a very long time and have never seen this problem, now I really curious to see if I can make happen. More to be revealed.
