billon on 28 Mar 2018
  • 801KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 3 Aug 2008
  • Suggested by donald

FillDisk is a simple utility that fills up a disk with data. This is useful for testing a separate application's behavior when a disk is approaching full capacity or basic free space shredding when you don't have admin access (recommend checking "No OS optimization"). The program starts with 1GB files, then drops to 512MB, 256MB and so on until it completely fills up the disk.

FillDisk has a very simple interface: just enter a folder for the files to be created and press the "Go" button. You can stop the operation at any point in time and the file that is currently being written will close.

Oustanding idea but how about a mode that scrolls text like a movie scrolls text? Why doesn't it have that? The text-replacing line roll thing is just odd.

For every file you open, it creates a hidden .rtainfo file in the same folder. And I thought Picasa was bad.

CloneSpy v3.43

billon on 12 Oct 2019
  • 6MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 12 Oct 2019
  • Suggested by Fluffy

CloneSpy can help you free up hard drive space by detecting and removing duplicate files with exactly the same contents regardless of their name, date, time, or location. Also, CloneSpy is able to find files that are not exactly identical, but have the same file name. This can be an issue for example if you have different versions of a file and you want to find and remove the older versions. CloneSpy is able to find zero-byte files.

Note: The installer now allows you to choose between a 32 or 64-bit version of CloneSpy.

What's new? Added:
  • You can now exclude sub-folders when marking or unmarking files in a folder via the context menu of the list box in the All duplicates window.
  • Remembered window sizes and positions can now be reset to their default values (see Misc page of the Options window).
Modified:
  • Hard links and shortcuts are now created before the file to be replaced is deleted (see Deletion page of the Options window).
  • Leftover files are now deleted at the end of a scan to prevent deletion conflicts (see Deletion page of the Options window).
  • Deleted leftover files are now counted in the scan progress window and listed in the log file if deleted files have to be logged (see Logging page of the Options window).
  • The title of the Main window now contains the program version.
  • Renamed the Priority page of the Options window to Misc.
  • Renamed Execute file to Open file in the context menu of the Single duplicates window and All duplicates window.

A lot of people here trying to delete multiples of the same image - I just wanted to give a shout out to Dup Detector, which is a great piece of software that does exactly that.

Dup Detector doesn't just do file-size/checksum analysis, it actually analyzes the images to find similarities. E.g. one could be black & white and the other can be color, or one can be watermarked, or one could be taken 2 seconds later because someone blinked & it'll find both and display them to you and ask which one you want to delete or if you want to keep both. You can choose how strict it is in its matching algorithm - 100% mach, 95% match etc.

You can even have it set up to automatically select which one to delete based on rules - e.g. the smaller one. Then you just approve the selection by hitting the space bar, or you can just let it do its thing automatically, or you can go full-manual mode and click the image you want to delete. Super fast way to delete duplicates and easy to use. I've used it professionally to manage large image catalogs that had a lot of duplicates of different sizes.

Unfortunately, it's not portable.

The latest version I have is 3.3.02 from July 8, 2011. You can get an earlier version from rareware.

Isn't the "Right Click Menu" integration added in version 4.0 basically incompatible with the concept of portable applications? Does this upgrade have other effects on the registry that impact/break the portability enjoyed by previous versions?

SecurityXploded on 2010-10-18 08:18

@Jimmy

'Right Click Menu' is for the list box within the application unlike the Explorer right click context menu. So no issues with portability.

Like earlier versions, it always store settings to the ini file in the same location as exe file. No read/write to the registry is performed.

I like this software but it has some bugs.

qj3328 on 2019-10-31 00:35

I have been using FreeCommander for many years and it is, simply, outstanding. To not have a real file manager is a misfortune; to be without FreeCommander is to be handicapped. Over time I have introduced many new users to FreeCommander and the results are always the same after several weeks of use - fascination that they ever managed to function with that Windows File Explorer thing. I had moved to FreeCommander when the old Xtree/XtreeGold file manager was no longer functional in Windows, and other file managers were not handling the complex file management work regularly encountered. At first, the two default panes in FreeCommander seemed odd. Though one pane can be disabled or hidden, dual panes grow quickly on the user until one realizes - wait, how can anyone function with a file manager that has just one pane?
