System Explorer is a tool for accessing a variety of system internals. It can also be used as a Task Manager replacement with detailed information about processes, startup entries, explorer/IE add-ons, uninstallers, services, drivers, connections, opened files etc. It has a registry/file snapshot feature so that changes to the system can be computed and displayed in tree view or text list format. It also has a processes security tool that checks your processes against an online database.

PDF-XChange Viewer v2.5.310.0 Updated

  • 20MB (uncompressed)
  • Suggested by Myles

PDF-XChange Viewer is a feature-rich program that displays multiple PDF documents within a tabbed interface. Edit features include the ability to rotate documents, add comments/annotations to any PDF file, apply custom stamps from any image/PDF file/Windows clipboard, mark-up pages with text and objects, and type directly on any PDF page in "Typewriter" mode. The program supports exporting to BMP/JPEG/TIFF/PNG etc., or extracting text from a PDF page/file. Additional features include capturing the document with the snapshot tool (copies an area to clipboard), measuring tools for distance, area, and perimeter, and more. A recommended picture-to-text OCR plugin is available (thanks Bruce) as is a PDF help file.

Alternatively, PDF-XChange Viewer Portable adjusts paths and is bundled with the OCR plugin and help.

Note: The free version of PDF-XChange Viewer is missing some features of its commercial siblings, but is otherwise fully functional and totally free for both private and commercial use.

Love how the search tool works with the current PDF, all files opened in tabs, or even an entire folder or drive, with results appearing in an easily accessible side window organized by files and instances. This is the best freeware search tool I've used so far (outside of DocFetcher as it searches more PDFs).

Tracker Software doesn't seem to provide an updated changelog -- but (as previously noted by Fred: http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1436#comment19769) there's an history page @ http://www.tracker-software.com/PDFXV_history.html ...

GifCam v4.5 Updated

Checker on 15 Oct 2014

GifCam is a handy and reliable application designed to record the screen and to convert the recordings into GIF format. It supports to define the recording frame rate, to select the color quality, to add a text in frames, capture the cursor, and much more.

Great for demonstrations, how-tos, and bug testing.

Category:
System Requirements: WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8
Writes settings to: None
Stealth: ? Yes
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch GifCam.exe.
What's new?
  • Crop: With the nostalgic "Marching ants" selection effect.
  • Hue And Saturation: Because saturation and shading of two colors generate "good quality looking" gif.
  • Other Fixes and Changes:
    - Fixing double extension "gif.gif" file name problem.
    - Renaming "yoyo" option name to "add reverse frames" clearer function name.
    - Removing "Add 0.1 Sec Delay" and "Remove 0.1 Sec Delay" options because the right click edit menu is getting bigger and adding delay can be done more practically by dragging delay label or from "keyboard input" window.
    - Fixing dragging delay stops.
    - Centering all windows to main GifCam window.
    - Fixing power of 10 gif size in preview window.

apometron: I think you'll need to disable your anti-virus or try downloading from snapfiles: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/gifcam.html

Shutter Lite v3.6 Updated

Checker on 4 Oct 2014
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Suggested by USB_Kx

Shutter lets you perform an action when a user-specified event occurs. The event could be timer countdown, a certain time trigger, low CPU usage, user inactive, low battery etc. The action could be shutdown, reboot, logoff, lock workstation, sleep, hibernate etc. It is also able to play a custom sound and/or run a program of your choice, in addition to displaying a user-configurable message. A web interface is also available that permits remote execution of one of a list of actions.

Note: The developer has added limitations in recent "Lite" versions of his software. Shutter is limited to 5 presets, events, and actions.

How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch Shutter.exe.
What's new?
  • "File Size Limit" event renamed to "File Size".
  • "File Size" event can be triggered when file no longer exists.
  • "File Size" event checks file every second instead of 5 seconds.
  • Use "MS Shell Dlg 2" font instead of "MS Shell Dlg" on Windows 2000 and later versions; This system font substitute maps to "Tahoma" which better handles ambiguity between letter "I" and digit "1".

Works great. I find this very useful for uploading videos online. It can take hours for them to complete, so I usually do it overnight. However, I want the computer to shut off after they finish uploading. This program did the trick!

smaragdus on 2013-09-05 17:50

Shutter version 3.3 is no longer FreeWare for non-commercial use, it is now CrippleWare- Shutter Lite.

freakazoid on 2014-04-24 17:07

Recently, I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Update 1 and had trouble waking up the computer from sleep.

I tried various solutions, but ended up turning off automatic sleep in Windows and using Shutter to Sleep after X amount of time is inactive. Now, I'm able to wake the com up. I understand this is a workaround, but this ended up working for me.

Great little utility. I regularly have a lot of zip files I need to move to different locations. This is a real timesaver.
