Is it possible to change Visual CD in such a way that it compensates for USB memory stick drive letter changes, and use \Catalogs as path instead of E:\VisualCD\Catalogs?

  • Released on 14 Feb 2010
  • Suggested by joby_toss

File Replicator is a batch file search-and-replace that lets you modify all instances of a file in a destination directory or drive without having to manually search. For example, if 7-zip.exe is a component of many programs in your portable collection, you can enable the latest-and-greatest version added to all of them. Simply select the destination to search (e.g. USB drive letter) and the file you wish to replace. From there it will search the drive and show a list of successful files found and ask if you wish to overwrite.

I've been using this frequently as a replacement for the original Universal Extractor and it's so far saved me a lot of time and energy.

The download found on the github site is currently missing an .exe (or any other executable) file.

I'm guessing you downloaded the source code zip file. If you click on the download link and go to the bottom of RC2 area, just above 2.0.0 RC1 you'll see "Assets", click on that and then the top download "UniExtractRC2.zip".

Free Download Manager v3.9.7 build 1641

billon on 13 Dec 2018
  • 17MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 14 Nov 2018
  • Suggested by Sydney2K

Free Download Manager (FDM) is a feature-rich tool for handling and accelerating downloads. Includes a site explorer, offline website downloader, scheduler, video downloader (YouTube, Google Video etc.), BitTorrent support and more. An included media file preview prevents downloading mislabeled music or video while a ZIP file preview tool saves download time and bandwidth by selectively removing unneeded parts. A hash check capability can verify downloads and the program can be controlled remotely over the Internet (fdmwi.exe).

Especially useful to overcome unreliable/slow connections that require frequent download restarts, when bandwidth is at a premium, or for very large files.

Alternatively, Free Download Manager Portable is available, as well as a "lite" version, which has not been tested for portability.

NOTE: The program will now prompt for upgrade to the newest version on startup, which is not portable (thanks Joby) and uses a closed-source license.

Great piece of software. Tried fixing an archive in WinRAR but it failed. Tried this and it was able to rebuild the Zip file. Thanks for the post!

webfork on 2013-09-01 18:39

You only need this program when something goes wrong and I got a chance to test it when an archived ZIP file went bad. The program worked great and did exactly what I needed. The program extracts the files from the archive that it can, then re-zipps them out to a new one (that isn't broken). Since I then extracted said archive, part of me wishes there was an option to just extract the good files and folders.

@PAFuser: it's unfortunate what some people think is obsolete. There are a whole lot of very old programs on my machine that still do a way better job than available alternatives.

PAFuser on 2017-06-29 19:30

I do not disagree, I still use Excel 2003, and it took some work to get it to work correctly on Windows 10 - 64 bit. If program is all you need and works, great. SE-Explorer zip contains SE-MediaPlayer, does not work. Context menu limited to SE-Explorer list, unlike FreeCommanderXE, etc. which include context items added to Windows menu. Future development might have changed this.

I have been using this program for years. I have tried every way possible to contact the authour in order to have some improvements made, but can't ever seem to get ahold of him. None of the comments I make on the page ever get moderated and posted.

It has an issue where if you create a new folder and then immediately attempt to delete it, you will get an application exception, even the app won't crash completely. After that exception, nothing you do will get saved, so the best thing to do at that point is to exit the program completely and re-open it. I used reshacker on it and was able to achieve wordwrap in the comments pane, and to remove the functionality where the cursor gets put anywhere you click instead of going to last place available in the line of text. If anyone wants my hacked version, I can provide it. Like I said, I've tried everything to get ahold of the authour, but all to no avail. However, despite all this, I haven't found a better "code bank" than this one, and I've tried them all.

@tproli
Fixed. Here's what happened... I opened CodeBank2's config file with Notepad while testing the program for portability. But I totally forgot about that when I was looking for registry changes. To cut the story short, .xdb2 came up in the search results and I was quick to list it as "not stealth", neglecting the fact that Notepad was the culprit. Thanks, redfaced baas.
