calibre is a feature-rich e-book library management application with a variety of useful functions including viewer, addendums, editor, online book and news search/download. The software can perform detailed searches, convert e-books to device-specific formats, batch metadata tools, and a content server for online access to your collection.

The program syncs automatically with many different physical devices. It supports a variety of ebook and document formats.

Cross-platform with clients available for Mac and Linux. Alternatively, Calibre Portable and an outdated X-calibre, as well as a WinXP-compatible version are also available.

AndTheWolf - Although not officially supported, the current release works fine on Windows 7. is testing every release for compatibility with Windows 7 as part of packaging calibre Portable. One of us will update the listing if something changes in the future.

Incidentally there's an official portable version available on the Calibre website (, which works fine and appears to be stealth. (No Trolltech keys.)

@bzl333 weel, you have to bear criticism if you want to improve! (unkind criticism is another matter)
Calibre is "huge" (maybe it have to be like that, it's not a criticism, it's just a pity!), and I too don't like at all its way to make its own library (I have to put there only books I want to convert, and remove them, not a user friendly behaviour). It's a little too complicated, but it does its job well!
For me it's a must-have but also a could-be-better!! :-)

@Tom - well its FREEEEEEEE so you got more than you paid the evil author of the program. also will be nice if you spend thousands of hours developing a free program and then let others criticize you with BIG BOLD ANGRY CAPITALS!!!!
