Important to know:
i.Scribe Free only support one (1) mail account.

I tried zo use I.Scribe vie Imap with my Mailbox. Unfortunately the Imap functionality of I-Scribethis seems to be completely not in a good sape. The performance when synchronizing folder or moving/deleting Emails is very, very slow.
Could it be I am making anything wrong or the actual build has some bugs?

@Falaffel: I'm not an i.Scribe user so you probably want to try contacting support about that. Failing that, you might try listing something in our troubleshooting forums to see if someone has run into a similar issue.

I recently moved away from Thundebird after 10 years use because everytime they update it, it breaks something or it runs slower. Slypheed is excellent. Its fast and reliable and doesn`t render html, which is exactly what I need.

hamasaki on 2014-06-28 04:10

@lux Maybe this was an earlier version? Now it stores all the data within the app folder, so portable.

domestique on 2015-12-17 23:20

@Kea: Thanks for the warning re. non-encrypted password storage. It's the same reason I ditched filezilla.

Not encrypting one's account info is lame for otherwise well thought out software.

Bye bye Sylpheed >.

Pegasus Mail v4.72

webfork on 20 Oct 2016

Pegasus Mail is an email client that supports multiple POP3/IMAP4 accounts, HTML email, rule-based and Bayesian spam filtering, multiple identities etc. It also includes special support for Novell NetWare.

System Requirements: Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8
Writes settings to: Application folder. It does create a number of registry entries during operation for the purpose of Windows DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange). You can read WINPMDDE.TXT for more information.
Unicode support: Yes. With Unicode fonts selected.
License: Freeware
How to extract:
  1. Download the installer and extract to a temporary folder
  2. Copy the contents of {tmp} to a folder of your choice and launch winpm-32.exe
  3. When you run it for the first time, specify that you want to use it in "single-user" mode
  4. When prompted, save emails in a relative directory instead of a full path as suggested by the wizard (eg. mail rather than z:\pegasus\mails)
Similar/alternative apps: Sylpheed, Thunderbird
What's new? Version 4.72 is a maintenance release for v4.71 containing the following changes:
  • Fixes a problem introduced in v4.71 where the mail queue would not correctly update or send mail when the 'Send now' button was pressed (you had to close and reopen the queue or draft manager window and send the messages a second time to make them go out).
  • Includes an updated version of Martin Ireland's MAPI interface, which will work correctly with current builds of LibreOffice.
  • The option to "Add to addressbook" when right-clicking an address in a message now works correctly.
  • A full German version of v4.72 has been released at the same time as the English version.

Note: at the time of writing, one anti-virus service (Baidu) is reporting that the WinPMail v4.72 release archive contains malware: given that 55 other anti-virus services on VirusTotal report the archive as being clean, this is clearly a false positive and can be reliably ignored (to confirm this, we unpacked the files, repacked them, then signed the new archive with a different certificate, and the Baidu warning went away, indicating that the Baidu scanner is incorrectly detecting something based on our code signing certificate rather than anything in the actual archive itself).

Popcorn v1.99 update 3

Checker on 5 Aug 2014

Popcorn is a text-only email client with SMTP/POP3 support. It handles attachments, but does not render HTML emails or display inline images, which means it is immune to most HTML viruses/scripts/trojans. It supports multiple email accounts, SSL and APOP. It is useful for cleaning up POP accounts, removing spam, unwanted mail, large attachments etc.

Note: Developer has ended work on the project - linking to entry (thanks Baas).

System Requirements: WinXP / Vista / Win7
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: No
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch popcorn.exe.
What's new? 1.99 update 3 - 21-August-2012

  • Fixed an issue introduced in release 1.99 that caused mail sending to fail if the SMTP server supported the CRAM-MD5 authentication method.

1.99 update 2 - 06-July-2012

New features:
  • Added support for TLS encrypted SMTP communication via the STARTTLS command making Popcorn compatible with mail servers that require it like Hotmail. TLS can be turned on in the the "Tools" -> "Email Accounts" dialog "Identity & Servers" tab by checking "Use SLL / TLS". When enabled, TLS encryption will be used if the server supports it for all ports except 465 which uses SSL.

1.99 update 1 - 29-June-2012

New features:
  • Added support for attachment forwarding if the selected mail has any downloaded attachments. You will now be asked if you want to forward them, and if you choose yes, they will appear in the mail editor "File Attachment" dialog as usual.
  • Added an "Open File Location" item to the the mail editor "File Attachment" dialog context pop-up menu that will open an explorer window with the selected file attachment location + highlighting the file.
  • Added support for column sorting in the mail editor "File Attachments" dialog (by path or size).

  • The toolbar combo box edit control for setting the "Number of latest mail to download" did not respond to Delete and Backspace keyboard events because they got eaten by the main window accelerators. They are now intercepted before the accelerators kick in, so the keys should now work as expected (i.e. text can be deleted). Also updated the same control to only accept numerical input.
  • Fixed a very obscure and probably 10+ year old bug that in very rare cases would reset changes done to account settings outside of the "Tools" -> "Email Accounts" dialog if it is opened and Cancel or Close (Esc) is selected.

Couldn't get this to work with Hotmail (Sept 2016)

Hotmail needs SSL for upload and download. The program doesn't come will the SSL libraries but you can download and install them on the local computer from OpenSSL.

Got upload working with OpenSSL (32bit light ver) even though I'm on 64 Win7. POP3 wouldn't connect....using port 995 Popcorn listed SSL support as available from the about menu too. Could be that OpenSSL was complaining about missing C++ libraries at install (you can download that too) but that kind of misses the point for me. If you've got to install a load of software on the local computer to get the mail client to work then it's not really portable.

Anyone get this working with Hotmail?

computernerd on 2017-01-08 15:25

Because Popcorn is a 32bit application, you need the 32bit DLLs.
OpenSSL doesn't provide binary files but has some respective links. There's a portable version as well that is simply to be unzipped.

Still, it seems to be working anyway.

nPOP has been a long-time favorite of mine for doing previews, quick replies, etc. Emails I want to archive I then download to another -- usually clunkier and nonportable -- client.

But actually I use the nPOPQ offshoot, available here: ... because I like the interface better. I hope that gets updated.

nPOPuk not being compatible with old email messages is kind of dealbreaker, nice as it sounds.

drongo on 2010-04-30 14:30

I spoke too soon above on nPOPuk not being compatible with old email boxes. It imports settings and old emails from nPOP just fine. And it does have some useful features lacking in nPOP.

However, I still like the nPOPQ interface better: There the left column has accounts on top and address book on bottom, while the right side has messages on top and message preview on the bottom.
