Greenshot v1.1.9.13

Checker on 14 May 2014
  • 3MB (uncompressed)
  • Suggested by david

Greenshot is a lightweight screenshot software tool focused on speed, basic annotation, and ease of export. The program includes an image editor, ability to output to file, printer, clipboard, e-mail, Office programs, as well as upload to photo sites like Flickr or Picasa. Includes a variety of customizations, scrolling (full page captures), auto crop, ability to use external editors, and more.

Functional in 64-bit. Additional languages available on the website.

System Requirements: WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8
Writes settings to: Application folder: greenshot.ini
Dependencies: Microsoft .NET v3.5 or above
Stealth: ? Yes
License: GPLv2
How to extract: Download the ZIP package (Greenshot-NO-INSTALLER-[version number].zip) and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch Greenshot.exe.
Similar/alternative apps: PicPick, LightScreen
What's new? Bugs resolved:
  • Capture problems since update to Windows 8.1 with multiple displays.
  • Box upload failed since 1.1.8.
  • Unreported: The greenshot.ini values "NoGDICaptureForProduct" and "NoDWMCaptureForProduct" had incorrect defaults, which might cause issues with some applications when using the auto capture mode.
  • Added the possibility to replace characters/strings when a pattern is used, to have more control over the resulting filename. E.G. ${title:r ,_} will cause all the spaces to be replaced by underscores.
  • The amount of colour which images are reduce to, if the setting is active, has been made configurable in the greenshot.ini property OutputFileReduceColorsTo. Default stays at 256.
  • Adding a newline when exporting to Word or an open Outlook email, this makes it possible to repeat exports.
  • Flickr plug-in: from June 27th, 2014 Flickr will only accept uploads via HTTPS! As the switch is already possible Greenshot has been changed accordingly.
  • Updated the French translation for the Microsoft Office plug-in.

I don't really use the included image editor for anything but basic changes, but it's simplicity and ease of use is hard to beat. Use this at least twice a day. Great program.

I regularly take screen snapshots for two different SW packages, and I like to keep the snaps separate. I couldn't find where the preferences were stored, so I just made a copy of my SW folder, and tried to set the preferences for each copy to be different. I figured if it was truly portable, each copy would remember it's own data. To my shock, the preferences are stored somewhere shared. This implies that if I took Greenshot on a USB stick to a computer that already had it, then changed file pattern or location information, one or the other copy would know what the other copy had. A quick test showed this to be true: Changing preferences for a copy running from a USB, cause the local system to see those changes.

I look forward to a true portable version.

Recent additions including the auto-crop and various great highlighting/obfuscating tools built into the editor are fantastic. Really nice to see this great program continue to improve.

PF Contrib: just tested and it works fine. are you sure you used the NO INSTALLER version?

you said
These are Trolltech (Qt framework) keys."

so I thought I might have missed a memo some where and maybe they were normal keys made
unavoidable I dont know

Napiophelios is right, it does write Trolltech junk to the registry. The "hats off" award obviously goes to him.

Can't open the .zip file (I downloaded the file from 2 mirrors, but neither 7-zip nor Uniextract could open it)

Worked great for me no problem with download, extract, or launch.
A great screen capture tool with neat features.
It will not replace FastStone Capture for me but it is a close second, and at half the size worth keeping track of.
