Andrew Lee on 6 Mar 2022
  • 219KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 16 Oct 2000
  • Suggested by Ram C. Dutta

SpaceMonger is a tool for keeping track of the free space on your computer. Each file or folder on a given drive is displayed in a box in the main window whose size is a relative comparison to all the other files in your system.

Note: v1.4.0 is the last freeware version.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: Windows registry. But given the nature of the application, I think it can be accepted as portable.
Stealth: ? No
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch SpaceMonger.exe.

Using it since 2000, small, simple does it's job !

Great program! I used to use JDiskReport, but I find the interface of this one nicer and more intuitive. You can see many levels (subdirectories, and their subdirectories) at the same time. Perfect for immediately getting an overview of what's taking up space on your hard drives.

Very nice, FAST and convenient program. Visualization is superb.

One problem: does not support unicode, thus folder names with different character sets can't be opened using the right click. minor or major - YMMV.

DriveSort v1.00

lwc on 6 Dec 2021
  • 32KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 3 Jul 2007
  • Suggested by modussn

DriveSort shows you an entire drive or a selected sub-folder by what are usually the most important criteria: the largest and newest files. For speed and simplicity, DriveSort displays only the top 100 files that match your sort criterion.

Most disk space tools show only folder sizes until you "zoom in"; DriveSort is a shortcut to show which specific files are usually of greatest interest.

I recommend using Everything (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1479) instead and organize results by date. This program runs a little faster than Everything's initial drive search and then sort, but solves the issue of not being able to resize the DriveSort the window, not being able to change the top files to 50 or 200, or the ability to update automatically with new file changes.

WinDirStat v1.1.2

lwc on 6 Dec 2021
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 2 Sep 2007
  • Suggested by Marc

WinDirStat provides a visual and statistical representation of disk usage, as well as cleanup tools. It reads the whole directory tree once and then presents it in three useful views: directory list, extension list, and tree map. Its built-in cleanup actions include open, show properties, delete as well as user-defined ones.

Note: The 98/ME version works on all versions of Windows but does not support Unicode. The 2K/XP version only works on WinNT and higher.

Alternatively, WinDirStat Portable and X-WinDirStat are also available.

Category:
Runs on:WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista
Writes settings to: Windows registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Seifert\WinDirStat
Stealth: ? No
Unicode support: Yes
License: GPL
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP file and extract to a folder of your choice
  2. Launch windirstat.exe
Optionally, delete setup.exe.

The three main issues I found with WinDirStat are:

1. It can't compare the current disk usage with an older snapshot in order to see what new files crept up, or which increased in size

2. It can't delete multiple files at once

3. Its development seems to have ceased in September 2007, according to https://sourceforge.net/projects/windirstat/

Very handy for visually finding and backing up the file caches on a friend's computer before reloading the os. You can quickly see which user accounts have files and which are unused.

I've been using this for years, sure it's missing some features and rough around the edges but it's fully functional and runs quite fast. A shame the developer decided to cease operations
