Within the minimalist checksum calculators genre, Robin Keir's diminutive Hash.exe (28Kb) is even leaner...;-)

Very minimal indeed -- doesn't take command line input (e.g., 'pockethash somefile.exe'), produces no output other than what it shows in GUI. The saving grace is its VirusTotal integration. |
MultiHasher is a drag-and-drop tool for creating and checking file hashes, useful for checking data integrity. The program will check files, folders and even text using a variety of methods with both pause and cancel options for large operations. The program can then compare digests to detect changes as well as query the result to the VirusTotal database. A search tool lets you quickly track down both files or specific hashes from long lists.
A recursive checking option (entire directory trees) is available in the options menu. The program can also use existing, standard hash files such as MHX, SFV, MD5Sum etc. to check integrity.
Supports 64-bit operating systems and available algorithms include from fastest to most secure: CRC32, MD5, RIPEMD-160, SHA 1, 256, 384 and 512. Can include one, some, or all algorithms available in testing.

Two bugs to be aware of. The first bug is: |
CRCDropper simple and tiny checksum generator that can calculate hashes for multiple files simultaneously. The program allows drag-and-drop of files and hashes can be exported to single file or to separate files. The program can make hashes in lower/UPPER case, can be configured to stay on top, and allows command line usage.
The program supports 10 hashing algorithms (CRC16, CRC32, MD2, MD4, MD5, RIPEMD160, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512).

This program 3 times or more has shown equal files with different checksums, a second check then has shown for both files the same sum then and the same sums as another program has shown. Why is it?

@uwotm8: what hashing algorithm are you using? With any of them, checksum collisions aren't impossible but remain highly unlikely. Anyway, the developer contact is in the ReadMe file -- you should send a report of the precise issue you have. |
HashFiles is lightweight checksum generator to check if a file has been changed, modified or corrupted. It features drag-and-drop for both files and folders, "Always on Top" mode, easy export of calculated hashes to clipboard or to text file. The program supports CRC32, MD5, SHA1 and SHA256 hashing algorithms and generated info can be lower/UPPER case.
Functional in 64-bit. Note that SHA256 requires WinXP+.

Fsum Frontend allows to compute message digests, checksums, and HMACs for files and text strings. It supports drag-and-drop and can function on batches of files at once either for creation or verification.
The program supports a host of different hashes including common like CRC32, MD5, and SHA256 as well and many obscure hashing methods (96 total). Allows both batch creation and verification.
As the name implies, the program uses FSUM.

Checksum Control is an easy-to-use utility to generate and verify checksums on individual files or groups. The program employs a wizard interface to walk through the process of creating or verifying sets of files. The program includes advanced options to handle renaming of bad files, as well as how to handle files in memory while processing.
Supports SFV and MD5 hashing methods.
Checksum Control Portable is a wrapper version of this software. Functional on 64-bit systems.

Very simple operation means this is a terrific program for people who ordinarily would never use a hashing program. I takes users step-by-step through the process with a lot of hand-holding. Only works on whole directories and not for individual files (unless done one by one) or recursively. |
MD5Checker is a fast and lightweight tool to calculate and verify MD5 files hashes of multiple files and folders. Calculated MD5 File hashes can be saved and loaded to/from files.

MD5 Checksum Tool is a drag-and-drop hash checking tool that can generate a file checksum to analyze if a file has changed, usually to affirm it's legitimate and uncorrupted. The program can scan a folder and subfolders (recursively), as well as provide a report of all files, their size, and checksums. Supports very large files (4GB+) and includes a progress bar to estimate remaining time.
The program will allow the comparison of two files with their respective checksums and supports MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384 and SHA512 checksums.
A 64-bit version is available (within the x64 folder).

There's no [portable] link anymore on the homepage (where other apps do) and I can verify that v2.8.0.0 writes it's setting to the registry.

Disregard my previous comment, something screwed up my regShot. It only writes the EulaAccepted key to the registry. Not stealth and a little annoying but otherwise portable...

md5hash is a simple tool for calculating file checksums via drag-and-drop. To hash multiple files (including whole directories), right click on the window and select "view session" from the menu. There is no current batch verification mechanism for these logs.
Supports the following hashing algorithms: MD2, MD4, MD5, SHA1, SHA224, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, CRC16, CRC32, ADLER32.

Sports an impressive amount of hash algos, would benefit from a more intuitive interface, maybe support for text input too.

This is a very good program that supports a large number of hash algorithms. It would however benefit greatly from drag-and-drop support rather than having to navigate manually to each file. Have emailed the author to say thank you and suggest this feature, hopefully it may be included in future versions. |
