Serva32/64 is an easy-to-use server package supporting a variety of protocols including Web, FTP, TFTP client/server, DHCP and Proxy DHCP (PXE Service), DNS, SNTP, BINL and SYSLOG. Focused on the quick deployment of a stable platform running as many server protocol engines as possible, the program doesn't aim compete on with other server tools in terms of speed or security.
Serva32 also allows you to setup a server which you can use to install Windows over a network without Microsoft's RIS/WDS/WAIK suites.
Warning: as of version 2.0.0, the program has integrated a timed nagscreen at startup. Because any configuration change requires restart, we are linking to the last non-nagware version 1.5.0.

The ftp service is a crock. This can't list remote directories, and crashes randomly. I didn't succeed in downloading anything from a NetBSD client. |

@bublible: can't reproduce so I dunno what's going on, can't help you out... But if you suspect a bug, contact the author and ask him: http://www.usbwebserver.net/en/contact.php

@dany: I already did and he replay that we need to edit php.ini in SETTINGS directory, not the one in PHP directory - and it worked! So all is normal now... ;-)

XAMPP is an integrated server package that contains many different tools such as mail, Web, FTP, and WebDAV. Various open software packages are combined to power the various services including Apache, MySQL, FileZilla, PHP, JSP Java, OpenSSL, and more. Tomcat and Perl can be added using add-ons available from the website.
XAMPP-Lite is also available. It takes up less disk space, but removes mail, FTP and other tools.
Note: XAMPP has many capabilities, including a portable MediaWiki or Wordpress installation.

I would consider switching this entry so we list XAMP Portable instead of the full version:

freakazoid: is there an advantage to using the portable version? I couldn't find anything on the site explaining it and the default program is natively portable.

webfork: Because it's their preferred portable build. Not everyone will need the full package. The lite / portable build should be sufficient for people building a website for testing locally and on the go. |
The Uniform Server is a complete web development system on the move. It contains Apache, PHP, MySQL and Perl. There are additional plugins that you can download at the website that will extend the system with FTP server and Java servlet support.Note: You might also want to check out Wiki on a stick to find out how to run a Portable Wiki server on The Uniform Server.

I've been using Uniform Server for a few years now and I really like it. With windows 7 there does seem to be an issue with stopping and starting the services for some reason. You can get around it by uninstalling the services through the right-click option on the tray menu icon but it won't work through the apanel web interface.

It seems v8.0 is out. Due to the big version jump I did not want to update the entry without testing. |
HFS (HTTP File Server) is a great tool for sharing files. Once the server is up and running, the administrator simply adds files to be shared via drag and drop. Users wishing to download the shared files go to the specified IP address/domain where HFS is hosted via their favorite web browser. They will then be presented with an easy to navigate web page that lists all the available files that can be downloaded.
Other features include uploading, speed limits, and IP bans.
Functional in Linux under WINE.

Amazing program. Great if you need to quickly share files either over a LAN (if you can't be bothered with MS file sharing) or over the internet (file too big to email). Not designed so much for industrial web serving applications like Apache, but it is very simple to use, making it ideal for file sharing.

After discovering this little tool a little while ago, it's became a hit among my friends and myself. It's completely invaluable to transferring files on the same network when you forget your flash drive and transferring large files. Genius!
