This is an extremely fast launching tabbed editor. Although light on features, it's very good for quickly scanning files and makes a good notepad replacement.

smaragdus on 2014-09-05 00:13

It seems that Extreme Editor has been abandoned long time ago. It's minimalistic and extremely light but lacks essential features such as URL detection and encoding (it is useless with Unicode characters).

Version 2.4.1.416 was released today. The version stays 2.4.1, but the build is 416, versus 404, which was the previous build.

The current version of this (v2.4.2.431) isn't stealth; it leaves a bunch of registry keys (albeit all empty) at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\First Objective Software\foxe.

Note about the 2.3 update: definitely takes full advantage of multi-processor systems. I tested it on Win7x64 with an i7 quad core and it got very close to 90% (few programs can do that). Definitely a big speed bonus over time there and good to see those kind of optimizations in freeware.

I figured out how to uninstall the user-chosen (custom) languages but it takes a little work.
1: Open PSPad.ini (if you opened it with PSPad or if PSPad is running, save it as something else).
2: Delete the UserHighLighterName# value / data pair where the language is listed (the crosshatch is either null or a number between 1 and 4).
3: Delete the language key and all value / data pairs appertaining to it.
4: If PSPad is running, close it - then replace the PSPad.ini file with your changes. Voila! Your user-selected language slot is ready for another language!
I have posted a request to add a mechanism to do this automatically on the PSPad forum which is very active and the author of the software posts often - not what you'd expect from "dead" software.
BTW: Be cautious about using the installer - it seems to have had some problems. Use the zip file instead and unpack the files to a folder of your choice.

Shadeclan on 2012-09-14 14:46

If it's ok, I'd just like to make a few more comments:
Viniciusban writes that PSPad has no comment-out tool. I don't know if that was true when he posted, but it has one now:
Format menu / Add/Remove Comment.

Webfork writes that it has trouble handling Very Large Files (VLF). In my experience, there are only a very few editors that can handle VLFs without absorbing all available RAM and none of them (with the possible exception of UltraEdit) is as full-featured as PSPad IMHO. If I must view / edit a VLF, I always use HiEditor from WinASM.net as it is made specifically to work on VLFs without hosing the computer. Unfortunately, it isn't offered on PortableFreeware.com but it is completely portable, writes all settings to an INI file and is very fast.

Tom mentions that the "stable" version is 4.5.4. Currently it is 4.5.6 and was uploaded about 11 months ago. Beta version, available from the forum and updated August 2012, is very stable - if the latest version is wanted, grab it from there.

PSPad has its problems but they all do - that's why there isn't just a single text editor that everybody uses. While Notepad++ is (undeniably) the most popular text editor for programmers, I find its interface somewhat obscure and its learning curve a bit too steep to make it useful to me. PSPad's interface is much cleaner and simpler and, if I don't use it for months at a time, I can come back to it without worrying about relearning anything - that's why PSPad is my text editor of choice.

rbon on 2019-12-25 18:09

I wanted a paf version of PSPad and I tried the online installer version of @prapper which unfortunately does not work.
So in the discussion https://portableapps.com/comment/242253#comment-242253 I left a note (# 22).
Be careful: when you extract the installer you have to delete the folders:
- $ PLUGINSDIR
- 7zTemp
and copy the rest into .\PSPadPortable.
Then update to the latest portable version which must be unpacked in .\PSPadPortable\App\PSPad\

@Judy: PRP was so happy to see you back, that the new test version of today is called "For Judy". :)

Could you please visit the forum thread here and check, if this one works for you too?

kanu on 2021-08-05 14:53

Updating the program seems to ignore and overwrite _every_ previous setting with defaults. Overwriting prp.dat and prp.ini with older ones with correct settings does nothing after starting the program again. Going from 190601 to 210522 (or 1.0.2.0 to 1.0.2.5). Should upgrade progressively with intermediate versions?
So weird, anyone has this problem?

Grisu on 2021-11-23 11:20

Updated PRP to build #211122.

Gwennel Doc v0.15

billon on 29 May 2018
  • 359KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 23 Dec 2013
  • Suggested by Cornflower

Gwennel is a lightweight word processor that takes an innovative approach to formatting options by separating them into a tree-like structure. This is useful for handling long documents with clear, organized formatting tools or for users who wish to focus on the text first and formatting second. Any style changes (such as headings, lists, or colors) are propagated throughout the entire document and, although only able to open and save OpenDocument (.odt) files, this makes the program a capable WYSIWYG editor. Additionally, users can open existing files and make rapid changes to the entire document.

It is not at all intuitive, but once you play with it a bit, It comes together.
I probably won't use it on my own computers where Open Office Portable is much handier, but as I like to keep my usb key light, I keep it there. Hint: go over your Open Office documents and see what styles you like to use, and update the openoffice-style.gwen template. I found this makes it more user friendly, as I am dealing with my own tastes.

AutoIt v3.3.16.1 Updated

lwc on 24 Apr 2024
  • 29MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 19 Sep 2022
  • Suggested by Klaatu

AutoIt is a BASIC-like scripting language designed for automating the Windows GUI and general scripting. It uses a combination of simulated keystrokes, mouse movement and window/control manipulation in order to automate tasks or perform user interface testing.

Users new to the program are encouraged to read an introduction (thanks guinness.)

Note: the outdated (from 2012) AutoIt Portable allows you to create a portable environment of SciTE4AutoIt3 and AutoIt together, as well as cleaning AppData and opening the program editor with sample scripts (also thanks to guinness).

A 64 bit version is available (within the folder).

Category:
Runs on:WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10 / Win11
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? No. Every time one compiles a script (at least through SciTE=>Tools=>Build) it creates the folder %LocalAppData%\AutoIt v3\ (specifically %LocalAppData%\AutoIt v3\Aut2exe) for temp files. But since the files are temporary (only existing during compilation) the folder is at least usually empty. See bug report. You might want to run SciTE through a Program Portabilizer set to delete the aforementioned folder upon exit.
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice.
  2. Optionally download an enhanced version of the built-in editor.
  3. Uncompiled scripts can be:
    • Edited (and also launched) with SciTe\SciTE.exe ((32 bit while editing)
    • Directly launched via AutoIt3.exe or AutoIt3_x64.exe (for 64 bit OS).
