7-Zip is an archive manager that can view and create a wide variety of formats. The program includes folder favorites, optional two-pane view, checksum calculator, file split/combine capability and more. Individual archives can be created with high speed or high compression settings, update options (including update, add/replace, synchronize), split volumes and more. Archives can be secured with standard zip or more secure AES encryption.
Although the official archiver for the open, high-compression "7z" format, the program also supports the creation of multiple formats including ZIP, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR and WIM. It will extract a long list of other formats, among them RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, RPM, VHD, VMDK etc. Even more formats are supported through third-party plugins. Supports many world languages.
Additionally, to use alternative toolbar and file icons, 7-Zip Theme Manager is available.
7-Zip Portable is a wrapper from PortableApps.com, auto-detecting 32 or 64-bit automatically. Alternatively, X-7zip is also available.
There is also a 7-Zip standalone console version.

@hamasaki - It's stealth to me. I don't see anything written to HKCU\Software\7Zip. |
Bandizip is an archive tool that supports a customisable interface, the searching of archives by file name, file splitting, password protection, self-extracting archives and varying levels of compression. It supports the creation and extraction of most common compression formats, as well as modern formats ZIPX and 7Z.
The program's "High Speed Archiving" function will allow you to compress or bypass the files its own algorithm on multimedia files (AVI, WMV, MP3...) or archive files (ZIP, RAR, 7Z...) that won't benefit from additional compression. This can increase archiving speed dramatically. Extract formats supported include 7Z, ZIPX, RAR, ALZ, EGG, TAR, BH, LZH, BZ2, ISO, CAB, WIM, XZ, ARJ, ZIP, Z and more.

I didn't realize Bandizip was here or I'd have commented sooner. I LOVE Bandizip it's the only archive program that handles Zpaq files well. When you have a big zpaq update you can Ctrl+F in the archive and filter and search the entire backup history of the Zpaq. |
PeaZip is a feature-rich file archiver with broad support for 200+ file types. The file manager interface includes a hash tool, file wipe, file associations, file splitter, themes, estimated compression level, system benchmark, image crop/rename and much more.
Formats supported include most mainstream archive formats, including ZIP, 7Z, ACE, BZIP2, CAB, GZIP, TAR, UPX, ZIPX, as well as it's own PEA format. Can extact but not create MSI and RAR files.
Note that tools setup through the Task Scheduler are not portable.
Cross platform with clients for Mac, Linux, and BSD, as well as a 64-bit version is available. Alternatively, PeaZip Portable portablizes bookmarks and includes both 32 and 64-bit versions, automatically using the proper one on each PC.

Download link (http://www.peazip.org/peazip-portable.html) raises a 404 "not found" error. Link instead just to http://www.peazip.org/ or to http://peazip.sourceforge.net/peazip-portable.html.

My experience with PeaZip is to go to: |
PortableApps.com AppCompactor allows you to compress whole directories including applications, file libraries and zip files. The program is a powerful compression tool that unites 7-Zip and UPX inside a user-friendly wizard. For applications, this saves disk space and increases performance when running from a slow media (like flash drives). For archives, this will recompress DLL, EXE, ZIP, JAR, IRC, PYD and BIN files to their maximum compression settings, as well as an option to decompress an app's binary files that were previously compressed with UPX.
All files are tested using UPX's test feature after compressing. Files smaller than 4K are automatically skipped as compressing will not save space on the drive. The standard Microsoft Visual C runtimes are skipped to prevent antivirus false-positives. Advanced configuration can be done with apps in PortableApps.com Format.
Note: As UPX will alter the EXEs and DLLs (reversible using the Decompress option in the AppCompactor) and some apps may have issues with Zip or Jar files compressed further, users should backup software and test it after processing.

tommyD: Disadvantages are that it breaks some programs, and it may be slightly more CPU-intensive to decompress libraries and executables on the fly.

I agree with wf; where is operaportable? |
muCommander is a Java-based skinnable, tabbed file manager with a dual-pane interface. The tool connects to a many online services such as FTP, SFTP, SMB, HTTP, Amazon S3, Bonjour, HDFS (Hadoop), NFS and more. File copying includes transfer verification, rate of speed controls and transfer visualization. It can open and create a variety of archive types as well as view and modify ZIP files without recompression. The program can batch rename, change permissions/date and hash files or folders with a variety of algorithms.
Cross-platform (Mac, Linux, *BSD) and available in 27 languages.
Alternatively, an outdated X-muCommander is also available.

This program still supports SMB 1.0, which is no longer supported by Windows 10. Very useful if you have older devices and don't want to make your Windows 10 insecure by re-enabling this protocol. |
