TreeSize Free shows you instantly which files or folders are taking up the most space on your harddisk without using heavy system resources or reading the drive extensively.

Alternatively, TreeSize Free Portable is pre-configured to be portable, automatically adjusts paths and is stealth.

System Requirements: Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? No. Creates an empty JAM Software\TreeSize Free folder in %AppData%. If the context menu integration is enabled/disabled, settings will be written to that folder.
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware/Liteware
How to extract: Download the "Portable" ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch TreeSizeFree.exe.

Optionally, to disable automatic update check on start-up:

  • Select "Help" and run "Check for Update...", wait for the popup message Uncheck the "Check for updates regularly" box

  1. Close the program
  2. Open GlobalOptions.xml in Notepad and look for the element CheckForUpdatesAutomatically
  3. Change True to False and save
  4. Launch TreeSizeFree.exe

I love treesize, it's in my top 20 list of must haves.

I love TreeSize too and use it all the time. However, with the 2.0 release seems to be much slower than my previous version (1.78). (i.e. takes about 5 times as long to scan a directory as compared to the old version.) I notice there is a new "Filter" option so maybe this is why.

Even more interesting... Scanning the same tree a second time (even after restarting the program) is MUCH quicker, so I wonder if something is being cached somewhere (i.e. in the registry perhaps?)

Terrific program but recommend the also portable Foldersize:

... as it will also analyze network drives.

It's not bad, but I find that WinDirStat is much more useful:

The graphical display makes it much easier to identify files and folders which could be removed or compressed to reduce the size of a package. For example, using WinDirStat and UPX, I've gotten my portable OpenOffice installation down to 106 megabytes.

Very fast application. However, since I have a lot of my files on a personal Buffalo Drive 600GB drive networked attached storage and this won't read network drives it's not much use to me.

I have SnoopFree running on my machine and after I started running this it constantly popped up telling me that some program was trying to read my screen - I assume it was this one. It was VERY persistent even after I told SnoopFree to block the screen read.

ZIP Ver. context menu to "ON" and exit.
Scan a folder from Explorer..then turn "OFF" context menu.
Now look at your "user\AppData" folder..oh..seems not Portable.

After using this software I found a file "GlobalOptions.xml" in the user profile folder. It's not stealth.

mrpink 2012-01-29 20:40

On XP it creates an empty folder at
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\JAM Software\TreeSize Free
and ofcourse don't tick the "show in explorer menu" option

Thanks. Entry updated.

Looks like v3.0 is finally stealth. Did not create any "JAM Software" folder in %AppData%. I'm on win8.1 x64

A better natively portable app can be found here:

The new version will scan network shares, cloud drives, and network attached storage. It's a great software - definitely one of my favorites!

IMHO the text to disable automatic update check on start-up
(second option) should be:

Close the program
Open GlobalOptions.xml in Notepad and look for the element CheckForUpdatesAutomatically
Change True to False and save
Launch TreeSizeFree.exe

@Ennovy: Changed ;)

smaragdus 2016-02-16 19:22

The latest version of TreeSize Free ( is in German only.

Ennovy 2016-02-16 20:38

@smaragdus: Confirmed, but when you rename the file "TreeSizeFree.DE" "" or something else :) or delete it the interface is in english

smaragdus 2016-02-17 15:51

Thanks for the tip, your workaround really worked! Anyway, I notified the developer about this problem.

gbrao 2017-04-29 05:19

In file "GlobalOptions.xml" Search for the text "True" and replace it with "False"
Save the file and close the editor. TreeSize Free will now start without the ribbon interface.

Ennovy 2017-04-29 05:50

@gbrao Thank you

Search for the text UseRibbonUI and replace true with false
