Synopsis: DSpeech is a text-to-speech program with the option of saving the output as a WAV or MP3 file, which is great for creating audio books from text sources. It also supports dynamically changing the features of the voices eg. insert pauses, emphasize specific words, spell them out etc. using tags.

DSpeech works out-of-the-box on WinXP because the Microsoft speech engine SAPI5 is included by default. If you want to run DSpeech on WinNT/2K, you will need to install the speech engine separately. You will find links to plugins, speech engines and voice sets on the program website.

[Anonymous] StefanoIt's not free! Only ten translation per day are free, iof you want more you have to register and donate. [2007-05-16 07:02]

[Anonymous] WebforkRegarding Stefano's comment:

I just tested it extensively and it doesn't appear to have this register/donate requirement. In fact, there's no place in the program at all to register.

Your problem isn't DSpeech, it's the voice you are using that needs registration, try with Microsoft SAM/Anna or other free voices.

[Anonymous] PJIf you have changed windows DPI (if you need larger fonts to be able to read it) the program isn't programmet to take care of that, and most controls end up outside the window (which you can't resize) making the program close to useless. [2007-05-25 17:58]

[Anonymous] christianno registration asked for me.works fine (unlimited) on tablet pc. stefano's link (2 posts above) doesn't point to dspeech anyway. [2007-07-10 21:08]

[Anonymous] SupHow do I get more voices [2008-06-19 22:05]

[Anonymous] KermodeWell there is no registration in this, and the DPI display bug was never fixed. His website tells you how to get more voices. [2008-07-02 17:11]

[Anonymous] Bob DrysdaleThe speech part works fine but I could only get it to open one web page then it it refused to open any others. I tried shutting it down and restaring but it seemed unable to access the web [2008-07-07 12:23]

[Anonymous] ChristaDSpeech is a stand alone program of Text To Speech, specifically designed to furnish quickly and directly the functions of better practical usefulness, that are requested to this kind of programs. DSpeech will use the vocal engines installed on your computer, by default Windows XP has only Microsoft SAM. DSpeech does not install itself, is very light, it starts in a second and doesn't write anything on the register.

[Anonymous] StevenThis program contains a Trojan, you have been warned. [2008-12-14 05:38]

[User] Onesimus PrimeAccording to VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/1ad2e6f8cf28c870a6779947df6e2e7f6a50c22fda41fa57d25e718c7fe171e1-1274782233 ), only TrendMicro (1 out of 41 A-V scanners) had any problems with this. [2010-05-27 08:23]

For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
