south28: Of all the different video converter programs I've used, this is by far the easiest one to use and manipulate and the resultant video files have been more than satisfactory. It is the only one that managed to convert a couple of stubborn files that other programs kept leaving the video and audio out of sync no matter what I tried.
Many thanks to the programmer! [2008-10-06 17:00]
Eagles: Links are (still) dead indeed, but from this location you still can retrieve the version as described above (v2.0.8.3):
http://www.videohelp.com/download/XMediaRecode2083_setup.exe
And even more... there's a new version (v2.0.9.1) available there as well:
http://www.videohelp.com/download/XMediaRecode2091_setup.exe
which at this moment is *very* recent, so apparently the author is still active but on a different site? Or he has a lousy hosting provider with low up-time? [2008-12-09 02:03]
Tony: Full of bugs .... [2009-01-24 16:11]
somebody: On their download page, apparently they have a portable version... [2009-07-12 02:29]
Carbonize: This no has a portable download so no need to follow the above instructions. Just download the portable zip and extract the folder it contains. [2009-07-20 21:26]
clitoral hoodlum: Absolutely the best converter I have found! Beats the commercial ones, as well! [2009-07-23 23:51]
somebody: THey have a new version on their site: (v2.1.3.7) on their site, in both installer and portable (zip) format. [2009-08-05 15:10]
Fengzj: It still leaves configuration settings in Users/.../AppData/Local/ folder in Windows 7. [2009-11-29 00:11]
Andrew.A: This is absolutely the best convertor I used this days. It is fast (about 80 FPS on my poor PIV machine), it has simple interface. It can crop/resize/denoise videos. And it is absolutely portable and has a small footprint.
I recommend it! [2009-12-14 04:19]
CodesAway: Does anyone know if this program supports command-line options? I would like to integrate it with FreeCommander to perform automatic conversions on a file.
If not, at least it supports passing a file name, which adds the file to the list. From there it's very easy to do the conversion I want. [2009-12-16 06:59]
Chris: I downloaded the protable (.zip) version and put it in a folder. When I try to run the .exe I get a "cannot load profile" message. How the hell do you even run this damn thing? [2009-12-21 22:10]
CodesAway: @Chris, just extract the zip to a folder and run "XMedia Recode.exe". [2009-12-24 02:27]
TT: When running versions 2.1.7.3 and 2.1.8.0 from a USB Flashdrive, exiting the program leaves the running instance in memory. TaskManager shows it there. A previous version (2.1.4.8) did not do that. [2009-12-25 19:00]
TT: Memory leak fixed in 2.1.8.4 [2009-12-28 23:55]
Tala: You can't go wrong grabbing this gem. I've tried quite a few but can't go past this. Lack of English help files might hinder some a little but well and truly worth the effort. Thanks to the author. [2010-01-07 11:15]

For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
