Xenu's Link Sleuth checks websites for broken links. Verification is done on "normal" HREF links, as well as images, frames, plug-ins, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts, and java applets. It displays a continuously updated list of URLs which you can sort by various criteria. A report can be produced at any time.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7
Writes settings to: Application folder
Dependencies: WININET.DLL (included with Internet Explorer)
Stealth: ? Yes
License: Freeware
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract
  2. Extract the installer to a folder of your choice
  3. Delete $PLUGINSDIR folder
  4. Launch Xenu.exe
Similar/alternative apps: AM-Deadlink
What's new? Major improvements:

  • check css @import statements within <STYLE>...</STYLE>
    check url() elements within <STYLE>...</STYLE>
    check url() element within STYLE=
  • parse css files similar to <STYLE>...</STYLE>
Minor improvements:
  • sort "broken page-local links" section in report
  • url property dialog now resizeable
  • mailto with empty rest => "mailto:", not "mailto:@".
  • mailto:name%40host.com => mailto:name@host.com
  • all mailto: URLs of a host with successful DNS lookup are set to "skip type"
  • dito also for previously failed mailto: URLs of that successful looked up host
  • light green color for "mail host ok", which replaces text "skip type" for mailto:
  • renamed "maximum level" to "maximum depth"
  • GraphViz only for "ok" links
Misc:
  • changed link counting method, now in AddUrl
  • clean possible memory leaks when finishing; FreeLibrary() for DNSAPI.DLL
  • changed toolbars slightly, preparations for VS2010
  • for VS2010, expand application class with virtual INI functions because I hate the registry
  • "#" as error (not in public release)
  • DLL security: fully qualified path for LoadLibrary()
Bug fixes:
  • Lower case in check for .gif, .png etc
  • corrected bug in change from 25.5.2010 "set recent URL list to 100 instead of 10"
  • correct bug about CCriticalSection usage for ServerMap and CharsetMap
  • fix for false alert in VS2010 buffer overflow check

@billon: awesome news, this program only comes up once in a while but it's a huge help. I was wondering if it worked with newer web linking methods.

Comment above is in relation to its portability. The application functions perfect for its purpose...

Doesnt handle proxies well. Only uses default proxy. Should be able to specify proxy in application.

I just downloaded this and have run checks on a couple domains, but as soon as it's done checking, the whole program shuts down, so I can't save, export, etc. Anyone know about this?

Does as advertised. Very happy with the tool.

Nemo, check in the Options --> Preferences menu. Look at your maximum level setting. That indicates how many levels of links it will drill down to and follow (that may be the problem). Also, when you tell Xenu to check a URL you can tell it to skip external links (so you can speed things up checking links within your own site).

can anyone please tell me why xenu shows 1000s of URLs when checking a single page(e.g index page).

Seems to work very fast, though I'm not sure it found all the links on my site. The report was nice. Overall a decent program, thanks!
