Absolutely excellent program that saved a ton of room on my hard drive, clearing out duplicates as well as several multiple-size images from an earlier effort to compress some really big photos. The best part is how it automatically sees two photos that are already very similar and helps you pick the better one to archive. There were only one or two false-positives in a batch of hundreds (a concert picture somehow got paired with a painting of Mozart).

DriveSort v1.00

lwc on 6 Dec 2021
  • 32KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 3 Jul 2007
  • Suggested by modussn

DriveSort shows you an entire drive or a selected sub-folder by what are usually the most important criteria: the largest and newest files. For speed and simplicity, DriveSort displays only the top 100 files that match your sort criterion.

Most disk space tools show only folder sizes until you "zoom in"; DriveSort is a shortcut to show which specific files are usually of greatest interest.

I recommend using Everything (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1479) instead and organize results by date. This program runs a little faster than Everything's initial drive search and then sort, but solves the issue of not being able to resize the DriveSort the window, not being able to change the top files to 50 or 200, or the ability to update automatically with new file changes.

@JudyGarland: Have you tested on WinXP?  I ask because sometimes we list "system requirements / runs on" rather than "supported".  For example, a lot of tools here on the site were built before it came out, but we'll list Win10 if it's functional in testing.

JudyGarland on 2020-11-01 11:39

@webfork: I copy and paste from 'basic (system) requirements' section:
Windows Vista/7/8/10 or WINE to create the USB (Win 98/XP/2K WILL NOT Work!)
I'm able to 'run' it under XP though, but I have no idea if it actually 'works', either partially or totally.
Devs say it doesn't.

@JudyGarland: thanks for the additional detail. As usual, billon sorted it out.

ScreenToGif would be even better, if it was not for its unwieldy Net Framework 4.6.1 addiction
(2.5 GB of available hard disk space required).

For me, I'll stick with leaner, self-contained GifCam instead, thank you.

Some interesting news:
- Updated to 2.37 2022, May, 1st
- Repackaged since 2.36 (see https://github.com/NickeManarin/ScreenToGif/releases)
"New installer and portable versions with the full package (no .NET 6 download required) are available alongside with the lighter versions, which still require the installation of .NET 6 desktop runtime."

So, now we can have either:
- a self contained "ScreenToGif.2.37.Portable.x64.zip" at 67.7 MB
- or a minimal "ScreenToGif.2.37.Light.Portable.x64.zip" at 6.96 MB... but we need .NET 6 installed on the PC :)

I will try it now, for sure :)

Hi, the link downloads the latest version (v5.11.3) and it didn't prompt for portable install. Also, Windows stopped the file running and I had to manually allow it.

@Mixture - Thanks! I decided to go with the original inspiration for Power Toys's Color Picker - https://github.com/martinchrzan/ColorPicker. It's not portable, but it is simple like Pixie. Colora was also a consideration, but it was a bit less easy to use, so I decided not to go with it. ColorGrab is a no-go because it uses Electron which is too heavy for a simple color picker utility.
