BinText v3.00

billon on 3 Apr 2019
  • 37KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 12 Dec 2000
  • Suggested by __philippe

BinText is a file text scanner / extractor that helps find character strings buried in binary files. The program can extract text from any kind of file and display plain ASCII text, Unicode (double byte ANSI) text, as well as Resource strings. Additional useful information for each item is included in the "Advanced" mode. Uniquely, the program will show both the file offset and the memory offset of each string found.

Although primarily targeted for programmers, it can be used by anyone interested in ferreting out character strings buried within binary files.

Note: Although updated versions of the program exist, the 3.00 version is listed for reasons described in forums.

Here is an old (2006) but interesting narrative about using Bintext for viewing Unicode strings in executables.

BinText at your finger_tip: (WinXP tested)

Place a shortcut to Bintext in your Windows SendTo folder so that you can quickly send files to BinText by right-clicking on their names and choosing Send To -> BinText from the drop-down menu.

You can set this up by right-clicking on bintext.exe, selecting Copy then open up your WindowsSendTo folder, right click the mouse and select Paste Shortcut

As an added bonus, files get automatically loaded in BinText "Advanced view" mode, no need even for clicking the GO button...;-)

Angry IP Scanner v2.21

__philippe on 25 Jan 2021
  • 108KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 8 Apr 2004
  • Suggested by Andrew Lee

Angry IP Scanner is a fast IP scanner that can ping a range of IP addresses to check if they are alive, then optionally resolve hostnames, scan ports, etc. The program is useful for network administrators to monitor and manage their networks.

Note: Current versions of this program require Java. Until this is tested as portable, we are linking to the previous non-Java version.

Category:
Runs on:Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Windows registry. But given the nature of the application, I think it can be accepted as portable. An option is provided to delete registry entries upon user's request.
License: GNU GPLv2
How to extract: Download IPscan221.EXE to a folder of your choice and launch.

@Craunch

One more reason to use the older legacy version instead, which, afaik, does not need Java.

Craunch: just added a note to the entry.

__philippe on 2016-01-30 17:10

As illustrated in the forum http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=78597
AdvancedIPscanner is NOT portable.

Besides, the package contains no less than 45 distinct files, including umpteen dll's, for a bloated total of 8.8MB, versus AngryIPscanner single 108KB *.exe.

Take you pick...;-)

FileVerifier++ v0.6.3.5830

billon on 14 Jul 2016
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 22 May 2010
  • Suggested by I am Baas

FileVerifier++ checks and compares files to see if they have been modified. Supports drag-and-drop, recursive directory processing, patterns, color coding, export to a variety of hashing formats (.sfv, .md5, .csv, etc.) and more. Can use any of 21 different hashing algorithms such as CRC16 for speed and SHA-512 for security (uses the standard MD5 by default).

The program (ZIP version) will automatically ask to create verification files with relative pathways, which is much more portable.

Win2K users should use an earlier version. A beta 64-bit version is available.

Category:
Runs on:Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
License: GPL v2
How to extract: Download the ZIP package (fv-X.X.XXXX.zip) and extract to a folder of your choice. Delete files fvshell.dll, winfvc.exe; fvc.exe, fvc-batch.cmd, fvc-batch.js. Launch fv.exe.
Similar/alternative apps: MultiHasher
What's new? Applied:
  • A workaround for a condition causing a brief delay in the program exit on certain systems.
Fixed:
  • A situation where the program would crash upon recalculating or verifying a list where a significant number of files are skipped initially.
  • A situation where the program will crash upon writing lists with entries with dates prior to 1/1/1970. Any dates prior to this will be set to 1/1/1970. This restriction will be lifted in future versions.

A little intimidating at first, but so far looks like the best file verification tool I've tried yet. Fast, recursive directory verify, open source, relative pathways, and multiple different verification methods? Dream come true for making sure your data hasn't changed or corrupted. Recommend MD5 for general file verification and SHA 256 for security verifications.

FV++ Author on 2011-04-28 21:10

There is a version of FV++ that works with Windows 2000. The version is v0.6.4.6010 (it is under fileverifier-testing). While several of the icons do not render properly under Win2K, it is functional.

Also, there is no functional difference between the installed version and the ZIP version, at least in terms of the program itself. The executables are identical. What makes a FV++ installation portable is the presence of the fv.cfg file in the installation directory. There are no differences besides this and the lack of an installer.

Hi guys. I am a developer of this free tool. Let me clarify the 'hard drive' recovery. The software is able to restore accidentally deleted files from built-in hard disk drives as long as two the following conditions are met:

1. The file was deleted recently and no writing was made on the volume after that

2. Follows from 1. If you delete a file from a system volume (e.g. C:\), there are little chances to restore it because the OS is constantly writing on this volume (logs, registry branches, etc).

Odd The download says it is Version V1.2.0.0
but its size is 387KB. why? I have a 2009 copy
of V1.2.0.0 which is the correct size 272KB.

An excellent and important utility! Using a different (local) text handler for each and every time we input text is a cognetics nightmare which TEA solves quite neatly within our present architecture.
Note: This utility uses the clipboard to move the completed file back to the original location. Anything already on the clipboard is lost in the process.

This is a great program. When I was using multiple editors to get the best of each (NotePad++, LibreOffice, and Dreamweaver), I used this frequently. Also works well with gpg4usb.

FileHandler on 2018-06-02 03:07

It works well as long as you stick to editing your text and refrain from switching to various other apps - to research something for your text etc.

It seems to rely on Alt-Tabbing back to the previously used window to transport your edited text back to where it belongs. This will only work if you had not switched to other programs in the meantime.
