Popcorn is a text-only email client with SMTP/POP3 support. It handles attachments, but does not render HTML emails or display inline images, which means it is immune to most HTML viruses/scripts/trojans. It supports multiple email accounts, SSL and APOP. It is useful for cleaning up POP accounts, removing spam, unwanted mail, large attachments etc.
Note: Developer has ended work on the project - linking to Archive.org entry (thanks Baas).

Popcorn will use SSL, but you need a third party SSL dll/program installed already. The above program's website links to OpenSSL. This should work. I did not download from OpenSSL, however. I had downloaded OffByOne before, which gives you the option of downloading the OpenSSL binaries with your OffByOne download. I copied over the two files (libeay32.dll and SSLeay32.dll). And when inside Popcorn, when going into tools|programs /settings info, I get the message "SSL encrypted server communication is available:" and then it lists the 2 dll files.
As to how to enable gmail, gmail allows POP access. Check out http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13273 on how to enable POP access from within your gmail account and http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12103 on how to set up your email client to log in and get your email.
As for other webmail providers, not sure because I haven't checked. Some (I believe Yahoo does this) lets you access POP only by paying a fee. Third party programs are available to check those emails (unsure of if you can read them) but popcorn cannot do that.
Ultra-fast, ultra-portable, cool to cleanup POP3 accounts. Great job
Been looking for a much smaller replacement for thunderbird and have found this one to be ideal.
The Popcorn e-mail client is no longer actively developed, updated or supported in any way. So how can this be an update ????????????????.
Nieuwegein has a good point. But the readme files on the website do say:
Release date : 25-April-2008
Version : Popcorn 1.83
I can't really make my mind between this and nPopUK. Anyway, both are great.
I have used popcorn for a long time now and, despite the alleged discontinued development it is still one of the best portable text-only mail clients. Extensively configurable, it is also just right for deleting those message that sometimes clog your mailbox...
"The Popcorn e-mail client is no longer actively developed, updated or supported by Ultrafunk in any way."
This message on the website is ancient.
Please don't add an 'update' icon for old versions. It's more counterproductive than anything else.
btw, PopCorn is cute. Always has been.
While it does state that it is not actively developed etc, this version is dated 11th May 2008 so is only 1 day old, and therefore qualifies as a bona-fide update :)
The website says "no longer ACTIVELY developed, updated or supported." That means that it is probably a back-burner project of sorts. It -MAY- be updated at some point, but there are no guarantees. There is no support, or projected release dates. But if it gets worked on, YAY. That's what I take that message to mean. So, there may be updates, but there doesn't have to be, there may not be any more, but there could be some.
Highly recommended no-frills program, been using it for years. Lack of active development and no support isn't an issue, what with its bare-bones simplicity. Here goes my question: Does anyone one what has changed in V1.84? I'm reluctant to transfer my settings for just some cosmetic changes.
Just drag your popcorn.ini and your adressbook.ini from the folder where popcorn is located to the newly unzipped one and try it. All your settings will remain in your old version as well. It has a few bug fixes. The main cosmetic change is the all profile window is now docked to the lower right corner of the main window and not free floating. I prefer to have it free floating on my second monitor so I've stuck with the 1.78 release.
With the exception of the 1.5 and 1.6 versions, this program has been "no longer actively developed" since I first knew it at version 1.2! I think the author works on it when it pleases him, and leaves it alone when he chooses to do something else. And the "no longer actively developed" helps to ward off the pressure from those who think that freeware developers should dance at their command. I for one am grateful that the author makes this program available. Of course it will be updated, just don't know when.
I used Popcorn years ago when I was in college and loved it. Great to see that it's still going.
Have downloaded it again and am having some problems, have downloaded and installed OpenSSL, but it popcorn doesn't recognise it and it means I can't use it to connect to my gmail account ;(
Anyone any advice (I'm using Vista if that helps)
Try copying the ssleay32.dll and libeay32.dll that OpenSSL installs to the folder that contains the popcorn.exe file. It should not be necessary, but it will probably solve your problem. Good luck!
The download link doesn't work.
