Updated to LAME 3.100

v3.1

This and LameXP are my current favorite MP3 encoders.

lamedropXPd is nice to quickly encode a .wav to .mp3. You can also drop an .mp3 onto the program, and it'll transcode it to a .wav, which I thought was pretty clever. Simple tagging and encoding options are nice. Basically, if you find yourself routinely encoding in the same format--say if you run a podcast and frequently save shows at a certain bit rate--this is a fine solution for people who don't want to get bogged down in a lot of fancy details.

V3.01

Opps, my error. Didn't notice the response by @User that the problem was fixed as of V3.01.

TP109: Not at all. By default the "delete input file" option is unchecked. If however you change some option and run the conversion again, the program will overwrite the previously converted files unless you move them or change the name.

Since this overwrites the originals, I won't bother to try it. Glad this was pointed out before I tried it.

Ancient Images: As of V3.01, the program does not delete input file. Unfortunately, the program still overwrites any same-named output, which is not ideal.

LameDrop would be perfect, if only it had an option to WARN you before OVERWRITING files.

Jeez.

This is basic stuff here.

Until this changes, I'm going to use LameXP. I don't know if it's portable, but I'll have a lot less mishaps.

Why do you need a separate Mp3 encoder? Because iTunes and many other Mp3 encoders stink (see Wikipedia's iTunes article).

LAME Drop is the answer because it uses the latest and greatest MP3 encoder, has an ultra-simple interface, and is so obvious your mom can use it. More programs should be in this elegant drag-and-drop format and maintain this kind of quality.

Want to send something in MP3 back to WAV? It will autodetect and decode.

Note that author's site also has other format converters for OGG, FLAC, AAC, and many others also just as portable and drag-and-drop.
