Synopsis: Tux Paint is a drawing program designed for young children (kids ages 3 and up). It has a simple, easy-to-use interface, fun sound effects, and an encouraging cartoon mascot who helps guide children as they use the program. It provides a blank canvas and a variety of drawing tools to promote creativity.
Writes settings to: Application folder, though an empty subfolder called TuxPaint is always created under the user profile folder.
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice.
  2. Launch tuxpaint-config.exe.
  3. Under the "Saving" tab, check "Use Alternative Saving Directory" and enter a single period under "Alternative Saving Directory".
  4. Click "Apply" and exit.
  5. Move C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\TuxPaint\tuxpaint.cfg to the application folder.
  6. Launch TuxPaint.exe.
Optionally, you can also download the collection of rubber stamp images (and corresponding data and sound effects) for the "Stamp" tool and unzip them into the main folder.

[Anonymous] chrisBy default, it writes its data to the windows user folders. The path can be changed with the configuration program - selecting an existing folder in the TuxPaint folder (without any slashes at the beginning). Then it is truly portable.

Btw - nice prog, not only for kids, loads fast and has most of the needed tools onboard :-)

[Anonymous] Andrew LeeThis appears to be new behaviour in 0.9.16. In 0.9.14, it writes to the app folder by default. I will update the synopsis and the version number as well. Thanks! [2006-10-25 01:54]

[Anonymous] athis is cute!, and it has alot of features to keep your child (or you) busy [2006-11-14 14:01]

[Anonymous] fromthesticksJust unzip the folder then put the period in the alternative saving directory, then at the bottom left hand corner change settings from current user to all users. You don't have to move the .cfg file that way. It'll already be in the app folder. [2007-07-04 12:28]

For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
