Scribus Portable 1.4.0 from PortableApps.com
I don't think Portable Scribus is maintained anymore. But we just released Scribus Portable 1.4.0 with a greatly improved launcher and much better portability. It supports GhostScript Portable 9.04 automatically when you install it alongside (just like LibreOffice Portable automatically works with jPortable).
You can find the Scribus Portable 1.4.0 announcement here, the Scribus Portable homepage here, and the Ghostscript Portable homepage here. You can install them both with just a couple clicks in the PortableApps.com Platform's app store and keep them automatically updated as well. They also work on their own.

I edited the entry @ http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=658 to include Scribus Portable as an alternative.

Re: Scribus
I think Haller is suggesting we switch the official entry over to the PA version that, based on the dramatic boost in features and capabilities since the last version, seems important. Would you like to await further activity from either slythfox (the owner of the current entry's sourceforge project), winpenpack, or more native portability?I am Baas wrote:@JohnTHaller

Re: Scribus
Yes, I understood that but thought we should wait for updates from either slythfox or winpenpack first. That's why I also added the version number for each alternative and linked to this post for others to realize that PA version is currently the most up-to-date one. If you think it's ok to switch over than... you have got (my) green lightwebfork wrote:I think Haller is suggesting we switch the official entry over to the PA version that, based on the dramatic boost in features and capabilities since the last version, seems important. Re: Scribus
My intention was just to make you aware of the release, since Darkbee had posted that Scribus itself had just posted 1.4.0 and it was a big update. Scribus Portable in PortableApps.com Format is now listed on the Scribus download page as the portable version as well as on PortableApps.com. We worked a bit with some of the Scribus community for this release and did over a dozen test versions of the 1.4.0 test builds so we ensured that all the features and functionality would be supported and properly portablized.
Realistically, as Scribus Portable has the most complete launcher, is the only copy updated to 1.4.0 and is linked to from Scribus' download page, it should probably be the version listed in the main entry. The main website entry should change to the Scribus homepage and the download link should link straight to the Scribus download page.

Re: Scribus
Tested the 1.4 update -- this definitely dramatic, but the direction the developers went was not towards Microsoft Publisher (simple, easy, and fast), but more toward Adobe Framemaker (intelligent publishing, data-base drive, and forms). It has a wide variety of PDF tools for filling out and submitting that really feels like the tip of the iceberg.
The tools are still a little odd to use and there's definitely a learning curve here, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does a few things no other publisher program can by bringing together a long list of plugins and tools. For example, a list of 14 different barcode algorithms, a remarkably complex calendar generator, and support for what looks like at least 50 file types.
Good stuff.

Re: Scribus
I went ahead and switched over to the PA 1.4 version. The main Scribus website is listing it as their official version.

Re: Scribus
I switched your download link to the one you have here rather than the direct link. That way folks won't forget to update it as new versions are released. That is PFC policy, IIRC. I also removed the GDIPLUS prerequisite since it's included with XP and up and set Path Portability to automatic.webfork wrote:I went ahead and switched over to the PA 1.4 version. Re: Scribus
@Danix, how often do you update the Launcher source code?
Re: Scribus
@Danix: By the way, with your 50th post you gained ability to edit the database directly.

Re: Scribus
Topic update: Scribus upstream unstable version is currently v1.5.2 (release notes at http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/1.5.2_Release).
BTW, PortableApps has a portabilized Scribus test release v1.5.1 at http://portableapps.com/apps/office/scribus_portable.
On a topic of particular interest, footnote management isn't up to standard in Scribus yet -- new features (welding) and workarounds do exist, but don't seem ready for advanced use: @webfork: IMHO, the present should be the official forum topic for Scribus, instead of the one that currently exists in "Submissions" (viewtopic.php?t=250); these might be liable to merging. Thanks.
