The APNG format
Re: The APNG format
Re: The APNG format
yes, the above post and .apng are inevitable as are the only formats that make sense available, why reivent the wheel sure they can't don't worry is still future but we'll see no tacky-cornered well full colour animations soon in our web navigators
Re: The APNG format
Ghacks talks about APNG: How to add animated png (apng) support to Google Chrome
Re: The APNG format
Old thread update ... Imgur just dropped animated GIF files ...
http://mashable.com/2014/10/09/imgur-gifs-videos/
I wonder if this will take off because lossy video discourages collaboration, edition, and re-use. Importing the video file back into GIF format will result in quality loss. Again, a broader move to APNG would work better but until more browsers pick it up, there's not much more to add.

Re: The APNG format
Another old thread update:
Microsoft Edge (like Internet Explorer) will not support APNG (source). On the upside, Safari does support the format but until Chrome and it's copies (including Opera post-v12) latch on, it doesn't really matter. This is bad just because animated GIFs are probably bigger than ever and a huge waste of bandwidth as compared to APNG.
Just a few examples:

- GIFs are taking over the world

Facebook adds pointless "expression GIF" feature

Huge amount of money put together for company/tool that creates GIF animations

Re: The APNG format
The Wikipedia article (and its source, caniuse.com) merely states that Microsoft Edge doesn't support APNG at present.webfork wrote:Another old thread update:

A better source for the future of APNG is here: https://www.chromestatus.com/feature/6691520493125632
That page links to this tweet where Microsoft states that they don't plan to support APNG.
Also, the page states that APNG support for Chrome is "under development", but in practice Google resists it: https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.or ... BkOu93BwAJ
Videos (without sound) in Imgur indeed took off, I see them at times. However, their usage is still limited because you can't post videos inline in forums like this one. I'd still like to see all browsers support APNG.webfork wrote:Old thread update ... Imgur just dropped animated GIF files ...

Re: The APNG format
The following browser should support APNG:
- Firefox v3.0 and later
- Google Chrome Mobile for iOS v45.0 and later
- Opera v9.50 - v12.16
- Opera Mobile v10 and later
- Flock in v2.0
- Safari v8.0 and later for iOS and OS X Yosemite

[Edit: forgot to reply to this bit:]
It's also problematic as the format lossy (much more so than even the lossy GIF/PNG compression out there), making it less friendly to collaboration and tweaking.SYSTEM wrote:Videos (without sound) in Imgur indeed took off, I see them at times. Re: The APNG format
If you see a jumping ball your browser is supporting APNG
Re: The APNG format
Good news: Google plans to support APNG starting from Chrome 59. The launch bug report is marked as "Launch-M-Target: 59-Stable".

Re: The APNG format
First reported by Userfriendly way back when in 2012 , but perhaps worth reiterating:
Imagine, one of TPFC's top-rated, lighweight and fast image viewer, does play nicely with animated APNG's pics.
For a demo, copy the benchmark APNG bouncing ball image previously posted by Checker (image link)
and open with imagine.
Compilation of image viewers and browsers supporting APNG images, among which some TPFC's favorites :
