SmartSniff is a network analysis/diagnostic tool that allows you to capture TCP/IP packets that pass through your network adapter. You can view the captured data as sequence of conversations between clients and servers in ASCII mode (for text-based protocols, like HTTP, SMTP, POP3 and FTP) or as hex dump (for non text-based protocols, like DNS).
On Win2K or above, SmartSniff is able to capture TCP/IP packets using raw sockets. This method has some limitations and problems, but it does not require any additional installation. A better way to capture TCP/IP packets is to install the open-source ###0###WinPcap capture driver###1###, functional on Windows 98 and later.

@kermode - it works on raw sockets in winXP SP3, so it is portable for some users at least. |

I recently used this program to parse out an ICS file with a bunch of duplicates and data that wouldn't show up properly in other viewers. The export to HTML and CSV was enormously helpful. Even though it hasn't been updated in over a decade, it still works great. |
On-Screen Keyboard Portable works in the absence of a physical keyboard and makes it easy to access a built-in on-screen keyboard on any system you come across. It remembers your settings for sound, select by hover or click, always on top, layout and more. For earlier operating systems that lack a built-in on-screen keyboard (Windows 95/98/Me) it includes a simple virtual keyboard that, while lighter on accessibility features, is still useful.

WinDirStat provides a visual and statistical representation of disk usage, as well as cleanup tools. It reads the whole directory tree once and then presents it in three useful views: directory list, extension list, and tree map. Its built-in cleanup actions include open, show properties, delete as well as user-defined ones.
###0###Note:###1### The 98/ME version works on all versions of Windows but does not support Unicode. The 2K/XP version only works on WinNT and higher.
Alternatively, ###2###WinDirStat Portable###3### and ###4###X-WinDirStat###3### are also available.

Very handy for visually finding and backing up the file caches on a friend's computer before reloading the os. You can quickly see which user accounts have files and which are unused.

I've been using this for years, sure it's missing some features and rough around the edges but it's fully functional and runs quite fast. A shame the developer decided to cease operations |
