So I did some work with XAMP's entry today. The page seems to say that Tomcat and Perl are now included in the primary download but when I installed, it was still missing. I also updated the icon/screen, added a note about 7-zip (which is dramatically smaller), and a link about using it with Wordpress. In trying to learn more about web development, I'm going to try working with XAMP in the coming weeks.

Other stuff:

• I had to run xampp-control.exe in addition to setup_xampp.bat. Anyone else have that?
• Also, with basic NTFS compression, I was able to get the install size down from 481 to 267 megs, which was helpful.
• The "lite" version is now listed as fully portable with relative pathways, but I didn't get far enough to test that out and maybe modify the instructions.
