few minor site suggestions - listings

#1 Post by bzl333 »

hi,
would be good if when you log in, the website remembers display prefs as in say 25 listings per page vs the standard 5 per page?

also, the "newer first" vs "popular first" i think should be a dropdown box and include "most downloaded first" (or maybe page hits?) if thats possible. i'm wondering how "popular first" is calculated. is it just based on the stars rating and then something figured in for number of ratings also?

also wanted to say that the stars rating is kind of imprecise and maybe could be improved. maybe there is some way to encourage people to vote more often on this so we get a better reading on it?

Change URL of your TPFC bookmark to http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?s=25 for 25 entries, http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?s=50 for 50, etc.

Wait, what's wrong with this?  How is it imprecise?

This went through several revisions and efforts to try and come up with something.  I can't seem to find the forum post where we talk about it.

well if you look at it without hovering _it doesn't tell you much_ (<<---this is my main gripe) because its usually in a range of a shade over 4 stars to no less than 3 three stars. even what i consider great apps usually show only about 4 stars and some that i've never heard of seem to show more stars and fractions of stars in the ratings(and outdated apps of questionable usefulness still usually show 3 stars i guess because they have very few total ratings positive or negative). would be better if we can see the 87.9/100 type number in a graphical format without hovering and also how many votes were cast but my guess is that there aren't enough yet to have a meaningful sample.

do i have a better solution? not really but maybe smarter minds do :)

@ bzl333: Don't mix up the "popularity score" (the stars) with the "member votes" (the hearts) :!:

See this topic on how the "popularity score" works: http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 12&t=11234

Just to convince myself that sub two-star ratings for public entries do exist: :D

- Wire Hang Redux
- Ziepod
- Too Long Paths Detector
- TAGAP
- Duplicate Music Files Finder

Ratings lower than that can only be found in private entries.

Wire Hang Redux is possibly an infected file? Who knew, I can remembering trying it many years ago on my previous system.

Thanks billon, nice tip :D

I do wish you would reduce the number of posts to maybe 25 so our votes for apps would matter. I rarely log in because no one is ever here when I stroll by TPFC. It would be nice if comments contributed somehow as well to a member's overall participation.
