I have been using this program for a while now and I really like it! Especially the tree-index is useful to group things together.

The developer is helpful and he will add things to the product if he thinks that it can be good for the program.

technicolordreamcoat 2006-09-05 19:16

What an excellent program!
An ideal notepad/database for usb sticks with encryption capabilities.
I agree with Henrik that the author is extremly helpful:
After I reported that program termination takes more than 10 seconds when running from my usb stick, he optimized the program within a matter of days!! (since version 3.02)

inco 2007-02-16 03:50

it is loosing data even when saved, ok there is backup option but program makes backup only on minimalize or close. So even if you save data and system will crash you will LOSE IT

Mike Mills 2007-04-22 06:20

I have never lost data with this program, and I have used it since the earliest versions. The author is indeed helpful.
The program can be set to save and exit with the [esc] key which makes it ultra fast. It makes all the other similar programs look like bloatware.

portable paul 2007-05-27 09:24

i dig it. I'm gonna get rid of 2 other note taking programs in favor of this one. Only other thing that would be cooler is tab based, keeping a coupla working files open at a time.

thewolf 2007-05-27 14:02

why not suggest this to the author, he is extremly helpful and responsive to users

thewolf 2007-05-27 15:16

try the new memory/recall function from the menu bar,
looks like it is equivalent to tabs,
holds up to 10 places in memory stack = 10 tabs

portable paul 2007-05-28 18:39

yeah, i saw that in the comments but i hate questioning gift horses. especially when i might find something i like more the next day. thanks for the memory recall tip.. i'll check that out.

Pascal 2007-07-08 11:39

Excellent tool. Simple and efficient. Strongly recommended (and forget any other WIKIs...)

Dale Woloshin 2007-08-10 07:16

I have largely replaced my commercial copy of TreePad plus, and most other intuitive organizers with Mempad for the following reasons: Most of the time I only want text. Very Size and PORTability! Very fast and intuitive Search function (Ctrl-F and {F3}). I got burned with the Win98 encryption early on, so I encrypt my password pages with ClipSecure (http://portablefreeware.com/?id=1174. With Systray minimization and autosaving on exit, Mempad is my most-used program other than Outlook in the office.

MikeB 2007-08-11 13:50

Very nice, but sometimes we need to 'PRINT' our notes too.

picona 2007-08-22 12:34

Nice little app, unfortunately doesn't fully work for me as long filenames sometimes revert to old DOS name format (8 characters with a ~ ) after saving
As far as I can tell, content of the file is unaffected
I'm running it under an old Win98SE, not sure if this has something to do
still very nice for taking quick structured notes, but as always think about an independent backup :)

maldito 2007-09-24 00:46

wonderful program. maybe author can include a small worksheet :-)

firefoxteam 2007-10-28 10:12

It's a great little program, but I think there are little things to add.
- Need a "print" function;
- Need the "Export All" to export each note to independent txt file, with the names givven to each note;
- When exporting "Single Note" or "All" each note to independent txt file, need an option to NOT put the name of the hierarchy inside de exported file;
- When a encrypt the file in Win98SE, the password is not acepted when I go to WinXP, for example;

Well, thats all for now. I hope this requests of mine leed to an even better program!

firefoxteam 2007-10-28 10:15

Oh, and I think it would be a good thing to permit to open/save the file anywere you like... I can't do that and that's boring...

IM 2007-12-03 06:41

I love this program, specially the tree-index function. I really miss the print function. How soon can we add this functionality?

Kermode 2007-12-08 20:04

Hey firefoxfool - this site has nothing to do with program except telling people about it. Go go the site of the guy who makes it.

Cornflower 2007-12-10 09:51

To get around the lack of printing, I found Clip2Print
http://www.netadmintools.com/art346.html
and it works very well with MemPad.
As far as I can tell, it is portable, too.

neil 2008-02-04 11:39

a great program indeed - its always there on my stick / laptop, and i jot down everything important in it - like referred by the great Edgar Allen Poe - if you wish to forget something upon the spot, make a note that this thing is to be remembered - LOL.

Igor Blatt 2008-03-10 15:14

I have been using Notecase, but it crashed several times.
Copied all my notes to MemPad. Great little app.

Victor 2008-08-04 19:00

Handiest of handy apps when it comes to note taking. Portable, simple, and can be tweaked to do just about anything you can think of. (with the program launcher and batch files, the possibilities are endless.)

Plus, Horst Schaeffer (the author) is incredibly helpful. Like portable paul, I thought tabbed browsing would be really helpful so I requested it; not too much later he added a quick option to switch mempad files--exactly what I needed.

Everybody who likes the program should check out the new version http://home.mnet-online.de/horst.muc/wmem.htm

Obsessed? Maybe a little. ;)

KH 2008-08-29 02:35

This program is handy and good. However, the SEARCH function only work for purely English texts. Search function does not work for Chinese or mixed Chinese and English Texts!!! And for some reasons, the Auther is unwilling to modify it yet. This problem may apply to other Asian Fonts too.

nells bells 2008-09-30 03:13

I love this program so much. It has really helped me get rid of all the little bits of paper that seemed to be taking over my desk and my life!!!
Thank you!

Technomancer 2008-10-06 14:17

Absolutely Brilliant.
I don't really need any other 'memo' programs. I can 'categorise' my notes and find them easily.
If you like this, you could also take a look at 'Notebook Disorganizer' at:

IM 2008-10-15 12:56

I've been using this for a year now, ad I love it! I just Wish it has spell check...

Midas 2008-10-30 11:42

@IM
Just read this at one of the lisdude webplaces (check 'Notebook Disorganizer' above), but guess it could be good for you too: freeware Tinyspell seems to be able to spellcheck any app without such function, so you could try it with MemPad...

What a fantastic piece of software.

So useful for keeping text, code, script and notes all together in one place.

Thanks and very well done to the developer.

Huub 2009-04-06 14:02

I was trying to make this myself, but there is no need anymore! Really great. Would it much trouble to export to XML?

deuce 2009-05-26 20:50

tryed many many note programs. this one my fav.

Victor Feight 2009-07-07 05:28

I've made an autohotkey script to spellcheck with mempad (with an aspell binary.)

Assuming you have autohotkey and aspell installed, email me here for the script and launcher file—
vrfeight3@gmail.com

Also, check out the new beta on Horst's site. He recently added a feature (and by recent, I mean within a day!) I requested to automatically copy page links upon creation. So useful!

Tom 2009-07-09 07:05

Good: low memory consumption.
Bad: non-standard UI (e.g., File menu is not left-most), and search doesn't show all nodes with matching text like in TreePad Lite and The Guide.

KH 2009-10-01 06:07

Thanks to the author, starting from v3.33, Mempad is now able to support search for Chinese fonts even when mixed with English fonts.

Jonathan 2009-12-27 08:30

I am waiting for Horst to implement the sort item alphabetically feature in MemPad. Once he implement this feature it will sort out my messy all my nodes and make searching visually manually quicker and easier instead of having to do a F3 search.

Long Live Horst!!!! lol

ChemZ 2010-11-15 17:03

Great program for keeping all your notes and passwords.

michel 2010-12-16 01:41

Installed, copied some info and when I go to the program again it asks me for a password.
It wasn't an encripted file. Lost data and time.
This one is unreliable. Run.

horst 2010-12-19 16:35

michel: copying something into a file with a proprietary format will corrupt the file; use the provided functions!

lemmor 2012-05-05 05:53

been using this wonderful program forever...just recently, when i open mempad a popup opens asking me whether i want to open a .BAK or a .LST file.. i choose .LST then proceed as normal... how do i default to a .LST file to eliminate this popup?

V3.42

lemmor 2012-05-14 14:25

disabling membak.ini solved it :-)

I've been using MemPad for more than a year now and have found it very reliable, as well as incredibly flexible and versatile for its small size. It's text-based, but lets you link to virtually any external file and open it by association, so that text and related multimedia content on a given topic can be kept together. For links to program files or shortcuts, the extension can be omitted, and relative paths make the links a lot shorter, too. It's also very easy to set up a right-click menu for inserting accented characters, another one that lets you search selected text online in your choice of search engines, etc. The program can be displayed in any font face and size, and the user can customize the background colors, which can make reading easier on the eyes.

Using MemPad is not difficult to learn, but unlike so many other apps, this one has a very thorough and easily understood help file that actually does provide help! It's in the form of a MemPad data file, so that navigating the help file actually demonstrates the use of the program at the same time.

MemPad's unicode support and full portability are the icing on the cake.
