I think you'd see things differently if you had to be the person to go through and clean up the spam problems we had. Yes, it's a non-simple procedure to sign up for the site. Yes, it's time consuming and annoying. It's also time consuming and annoying to handle spam problems for a site that has no budget. As I say frequently, this is a site of volunteers and the owner is not getting paid to cleanup spam nor am I. We don't have the ability to take care of these issues in a heuristic way so this was the best we could do for a difficult situation created by ongoing spammers.
