Yes, that's the way it functions. It encrypts the passwords on exit and decrypts them as you enter your password as you start Google Chrome Portable et al.
webfork wrote:This came up the other day when I looked at an analysis for Chrome storing passwords in plain text: http://www.net-security.org/secworld.php?id=15376 As the article title indicates, so do other browsers. I use a master password (not available in Chrome) in Firefox in addition to other precautions. Although it can be brute forced, but would take a very long time.
Lots of apps store passwords in plaintext including some you wouldn't expect like FileZilla. Basically, it makes sense to assume there is no security around your stored passwords unless it states otherwise (and then it makes sense to verify said statement).
webfork wrote:In any case, if you're a standard Chrome user, it might be good reason to either enable BitLocker in Windows or use a password manager like KeePass or Gorilla.
Portably, you could also use TrueCrypt if you have admin rights on every PC you'll use it on or an encrypted flash drive like the PortableApps.com Carbide if you don't. Both will keep your data safe if you lose your flash drive.

I found a project that basically tries to recreate Opera 12.

http://otter-browser.org/

No idea if it's portable.

I found Firefox Nightly (just couldn't live with Sleipnir...)! :)

Edit: Otter not portable.

Came across this as well. Just gave it a try. Still got a ways to go, but it has private tab functionality already! Found it slow to render the Preferences page. Will wait until it hits a beta instead of playing around with more alpha versions.

Status of the company is in a bit of flux:

... though what was even more interesting was around how much money they made last year.

I'm surprised at how high their total revenue is. They have much higher revenue than us, for example. I didn't know developing a web browser can be that profitable. :o

  • Seems like "the medium [really] is the message" after all.

Another bit of news: Opera put out a variant on their "Turbo" compression service that works to lower the quality settings on Youtube and Netflix, saving bandwidth and electricity. I've been looking for something like this for a while, given that I'm not often playing video on large screens where high definition makes sense.

http://techcrunch.com/2015/08/18/opera- ... ix-videos/

(More from Opera http://blogs.opera.com/news/2015/08/wat ... opera-max/)

Sadly, this is only out for mobile devices right now, but does include some tools for managing other applications that are bandwidth-hungry.

Recently, the SurfEasy team joined the Opera family, adding its VPN solution to our product lineup.
I don't get it: do they offer free VPN for Opera users now? Even so, still not enough to make me come back... :)

Free users get 500MB/month.

Found an enlightening article posted by JohnTHaller over on Hacker News about the Chinese buy-out, along with an equally insightful child comment.
JohnTHaller wrote:The way Qihoo 360 operates should give anyone pause: https://www.techinasia.com/360-safe-browser-malware

Stolen recolored IE icon, sneaky installs, difficult/impossible uninstalls, fake "security" ratings, etc.
zhte415 wrote:Stated in another thread on Opera's sale, but to restate and reaffirm: anything that involves Qihoo|360 in a name should be instantly removed from your system. It is self-spreading malware. Source: Dealing with this malware on a daily basis. It replicates itself from USB stick to plugged in phone.

360/Qihoo is, in every sense of corporations or individuals seeking any semblance of control of their device, a heathen.

Edit: Live in China. Work for privately held Chinese company. Enforced removal of this 360 entity from company.
Sounds like a company to be wary of.

Edit: and these lines in the parent article were a slap in the face:
VentureBeat wrote:As part of that strategy, the company this month announced the release of the developer’s version of the desktop browser with new ad-blocking technology built in. The company claims that by having the ad-blocking technology built into the browser’s code, the load time for web pages increases on average by 40 percent compared to third-party ad-blocking extensions.

The ad-blocking technology is just one example of how over the past year the company had begun aggressively investing in enhancing the browser.
Failing to mention Opera classic had a content blocking feature built-in for more than a decade prior only to be removed for the Chromium version. Opera, pls.
