Format Factory (powerful media converter)

Doing a quick google check it seems there are portable versions of Format Factory (around 48MB in Size), no doubt these have been created via Thinstall. So it seems possible for a portable version to be created or are they not truly "portable".

Yeah, that's pretty much what this thread is about... A purported "Portable" version which is not, really.
Your mileage may vary - depends on which version you're referring to.

The site is in italian, the author (Antonio Cantaro) write tutorials for the site of OpenOffice (Italian) and GIMP and write this portable version together with Silvio Affaticati.
