Background: I was recently working with someone via a super basic screen recording program and realized I wished I could record what we were doing. So much of it seemed really important and worth referencing later. Certainly I could run ShareX or a similar program and just record my entire screen but that just seems like 2 programs doing essentially the same thing: one of them sending my screen over the internet, the other saving that same screen locally. It seems like a waste of system resources.
Research so far:
- I wanted to avoid Skype but anticipating that someone would suggest it: "Skype doesn't natively support call recording" [source].
- There's a browser plugin for WebRTC events but I couldn't figure this out: https://github.com/streamproc/MediaStreamRecorder
- Apache's OpenMeetings solution has some stuff but evidently you need to setup a server: https://openmeetings.apache.org/
- This long list of WebEx alternatives doesn't include a free option that has recording capability.
- BrainCert is a company that does essentially online classroom setups but I couldn't figure out from their website if recording was included.
- Google Hangouts has a lot of data out there about how to record meetings but it's all via additional software. Tools you can use (care of Lockergnome) and a doc written by the Camtasia people.
- UltraVNC had a screen recorder tool but, amusingly, you can evidently only use one at a time.
- There may be a way to both stream and record your with VLC, I'm not sure. This link seems to suggest you can only do one or the other.

EDIT: as of December 2018, Brosix does not support video recording for their sharing software and it doesn't sound like they have any plans to add it.
EDIT2: I should note that it's possible to use OBS to do both recording AND streaming at once. Since streaming requires a separate server and doesn't have the same featureset as some meeting recording software, I'm not going to consider this issue resolved yet.
