Portable web snap....

#1 Post by Banshee »

Hi,

I am looking for a freeware standalone app that will take a snapshot of the desktop and serve it as a jpg/image. There is an app like this for linux called websnap (sourceforge) as well as a windows version called http screen grabber (by the same guy who did http file server). However, the windows one is not very stealth, it sits in the taskbar and flashes whenever somebody views the web server.

Any ideas, if nothing free exists I would consider paying a small fee. I am not interested in keyloggers, or seeing what files have been accessed. Just the ability to browse to a web page hosted on the PC which shows the current desktop as an image is fine.

Ta,

Ban

I'm using "FastStone Capture" for that.

Seriously, though - If I was not clear I am not after a plain screenshot utility, I already use FS Capture for that.

What I want (and the examples I quoted were *supposed* to demonstrate this), is a tool that will take the snapshot and then serve it as a web page.

This is exactly what http screen grabber does, it creates a very simple web server on port 8000 of the host computer and whenever you browse to that server from another computer it takes a snapshot of the host desktop and displays it in the client web browser window as a jpg, allowing you to 'spy' on the activity on the host machine.

HTTP screen grabber does this beautifully, with a single application executable and one ini file. HOWEVER, it will not run hidden (stealth) but appears on the taskbar, not only that but it also flashes the taskbar icon whenever someone refreshes the desktop picture being served!

I need something with exactly that functionality, which I can run minimized and invisible to the user.

Sorry if my first explanation was not clear enough, it was late when I wrote it and I had been surfing for ages looking.
