This is a major release for fre:ac, which has been stuck at v1.0.x for years, and it shows...
- fre:ac is now fully multi-platform -- available in 32 and 64-bit versions for Windows, MacOS and Linux.
- it now supports multi-threading and, better yet, simultaneous output to multiple formats.
- the range of encoders, processors and output formats has been greatly expanded -- now, it even supports legacy Winamp plugins.
These are just my highlights, the list goes on and is quite extensive.
A couple of caveats I ran into in my brief testing:
- Checking for updates is enabled by default and the corresponding option isn't in "Options | General settings" menu -- it's in "Help | Check for updates at startup".
- While a number of encoders are included in fre:ac download package -- e.g., WavPack v5.2.0 executable is present in '[Program Folder]\codecs\cmdline' and is expressely mentioned in the online help -- nowhere in the program's UI (and pending further research) could I find an option to use it .
- Online help directs you to www.nue.tu-berlin.de to download the reference MPEG4 Lossless Encoder, where the landing page is in German only and 'mp4alsxxx.zip' is nowhere to be found.*
*) The only mildly reputable source I could find for it (via Doom9 and untested!) is at:
