FreePlane - mind mapping

#1 Post by webfork »

Portable MindMap with a LOT features and Open Source (GPL), but uses Java. Portable based on my tests, but in Beta and haven't tested with jPortable yet.

Settings uses the PA launcher program cleans the Local Settings\Temp folder. Settings are saved to the \Data folder as expected.

---

Very impressed after using this program only for a short time. Clearly has hundreds of features and capabilities. I was even impressed by the inclusion of a help file in the native MindMap format, one that clearly demonstrates the program's flexibility and power.

Export options are equally amazing, HTML, JPG, Excel, Flash, Freeplane, Java Appplet, LaTeX, MediaWiki, MS Project 2003, LibreOffice .dot, opal, PNG, Word 2003, Twiki, PDF, SVG, and a bunch of other formats I didn't recognize. I'm always annoyed when a MindMap program won't leave it's own format and play nice with others.

Freeplane portable with the test splash screen is created only to satisfy rules of portableApps.com .
I recommend that you use the latest portable version from https://sourceforge.net/projects/freepl ... ne%20beta/ (currently FreeplanePortable_1.2.20_01.paf.exe) or the latest stable version from https://sourceforge.net/projects/freepl ... %20stable/ (currently FreeplanePortable_1.2.18.paf.exe)

Regards, Dimitry (Freeplane Team)

Old thread update:

v 1.3.15 is out: http://sourceforge.net/projects/freepla ... %20stable/ ... download the file ending in paf.exe.

I keep running into annoying limitations in XMind so I'll try this one again.

There have been several updates since this was posted about last. I prefer the overall look and usability of XMind, but I have to say that FreePlane is just chock full of features. It also doesn't have any nagging feature lockdowns, as it's not "freemium" like XMind.

Now at version 1.9.5

I'm working on a longer post to address this but FreePlane CAN be used as a file manager / file launcher program. I actually tested several options in this space and FreePlane was the only one that could do this. It's very drag-and-drop friendly so you can add whatever files, folders, links, and so on and view it all in mind map format.

Local file bookmarks / folder management

You'd think this isn't a unique function but I actually tested several programs free and commercial (trialware) looking for this capability. It's something I first saw in CubicExplorer and have been chasing ever since. You can see some of my efforts with a post over on the TagSpaces thread.

Here's a comparison of File Explorer, FreePlane, and CubicExplorer on the same files (in purple boxes)

I'm confused why no other tools seem to be available in this space and why new file manager updates include anything more than a simple list of "favorite" locations.

FreePlane even includes a basic file manager (Maps - Modes - File Manager)

Drag-and drop friendly

The program does very well but with a few caveats:
  • Allows adding links, but goes with the URL, not the title e.g. "www.portablefreeware.com" and not "The Portable Freeware Collection".
  • Doesn't work with web link files (the shortcuts that happen when you drag a URL to your desktop).
  • You must add files from their home folder, meaning navigate File Explorer to C:\User\USERNAME to add your Desktop folder -- don't try to drag from anywhere else.
I couldn't seem to change the structure of a given mind map (it was stuck on logic chart) nor could I select multiple nodes without holding down CTRL and clicking each one. Seems like there's going to be a learning curve here, but I'm glad to have more options.

---

Suggestions welcome on tools that can help manage loads of local files, freeware or otherwise.
