Portableapps hits a billion downloads

#1 Post by webfork »

So this is kind of old news at this point (happened over a month ago) but nice to see:

Even if PA software isn't something you follow closely, the broader project of portability is also a winner. The base feature-set portability tries to advocate getting in front of developers is a win for everyone: it's not just running from a flash, cloud, or encrypted drive. It's also:
  • Locally run
  • Self-contained (fewer or no external dependencies)
  • Allowing multiple iterations/configurations
  • Super simple backup
  • Easy to emulate
  • Not automatically tied into the operating system behavior
Hopefully other positives include less focus on admin rights, web installers, adware, etc. but that might just be my optimism talking.

Anyway, great news in any case -- congrats to the PA team.

Congrats to John and his team. I use quite a number of their distributions eg. LibreOffice when the program is not natively portable. Great to have solutions available!

This is a huge milestone indeed.

As an ongoing consumer/user of TPFC and PortableApps alike, my hat is off to both Andrew and John. By far, these are the two BEST portable freeware sites available on the web.

Congratulations to John for his tireless work to reach this achievement. And Andrew, my guess is that TPFC isn't too far behind :)

I sincerely thank you both for making our computing much easier.

Cheers! :D

Thanks all for the kind words! Still working to extend features in new ways and get more apps out there. Strange to think I've been doing this since 2004.
