Suggestions for software naming

#1 Post by webfork »

  • One post on our site points out how you can build a program name from latin root words.
  • Start with a keyword to randomly generate possible names ... although it's meant for businesses and most of the results don't make sense, I did find some good terms I liked
  • Naming tips for businesses and for apps - while neither are quite the landscape that you'll see with freeware, there's some good ideas here.

 Etymological dictionaries and anagram generators can also be good sources for ideas, IMHO.

Yeah that's probably number 1. We also have a few same-named programs here on the site so choosing something unique to your area would also be a good check.

Great suggestion. I just entered "tools" and that immediately came up with some interesting words: https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=tools

If it's going to be sold/distributed globally or in an area with a different language, maybe check the definition of the word(s) to make sure your NOT using profanity/insulting words/terms or such.

Good point, thepiney. Nobody wants the repeat the mistake of Chevrolet with the Nova -- it sold in Latin-american markets where "No va" means "doesn't go", i.e., doesn't run... ;)
