VNote (Qt-based Markdown note manager)

#1 Post by Midas »

In a world of Electron based text editors, it is surely refreshing to see some departure from the norm.

Meet VNote (https://tamlok.github.io/vnote/), a FLOSS multi-platform (Windows, MacOS and Linux; MIT licensed) note manager cum Markdown editor, with good documentation and some very interesting features -- namely its integration with Viki, an advanced wiki and webpage generation concept.
VNote is a Qt-based, free and open source note-taking application, focusing on Markdown. VNote is designed to provide comfortable edit experience, especially for programmers. VNote is NOT just a simple editor for Markdown. By providing notes management, VNote makes taking notes in Markdown simpler and more pleasant.

VNote latest 32 and 64-bit Windows portable releases (currently v2.7.2; untested!) can be downloaded from https://github.com/tamlok/vnote/releases.

Also, please heed the following excerpt from VNote's FAQ.
[Q.] How to make VNote more "portable"?

[A.] VNote will read and store configuration files in the common directory of the operating system to store application data. If you prefer to put these configuration files along with the VNote executable, you could copy or create the 'vnote.ini' file in the directory containing VNote executable. VNote will first try to read 'vnote.ini' from where the executable exists. However, please notice that VNote will store the notebook's path in the configuration file, so it may read a wrong path and complain about errors if you copy VNote to another computer.

Interesting program -- a lot of these markdown editors are playing a balance between features (especially supporting lots of markdown types) and simplicity. This one is on the feature-rich side and well put together, though still confusing in places.

The local .ini trick seems to work, but I was confused why it didn't allow for relative path names. There's a prompt for it when setting up the initial notebook but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Also, this may sound odd, but the "Heading Sequence" option is a very welcome addition to my work with Markdown tools. Having a heading with a sequential number can make documents much cleaner and more organized.

I'm excited to keep testing this out.

Resources: 150 megs, 216 RAM (only one process)

Somewhat on the heavy side, if you ask me...

This days, I do most of my Markdown on my phone or tablet with Editor (https://github.com/billthefarmer/editor) or Diary (https://github.com/billthefarmer/diary), which are puny Android apps with a couple of hundred kilobytes -- but of course the web framework is provided by the OS.

Nevertheless, I am mighty glad someone has find use for VNote. 8)

@webfork: I'm kinda curious if you're still using VNote?
