I'm a bit at a loss - can I delete that without crashing the system?

I can "trick" my box into recovering itself from a previously saved image, of course, but I'd prefer to save that as a last resort.

Yes, you can delete those without crashing the system, but it sounds like you installed it. I would uninstall it and then go back and use the Universal Extractor method described in the entry.
