If you are hunting for an app that can make transparent captures (images), FGWndGrab can do that:

Thanks for the suggestion, but this app was not updated in quite a while, so it does not recognize rounded corners on windows on my win7x64 (and it has to run in XP compatibility mode). It can capture transparency, though.

Amazing how many features are in such a small package. Too bad the project was abandoned...
