Really great app this one!
Actually covers everything I need in a simple player, only downside is the 'only rip one track at a time' in the freeware version, so close to being perfect, but once again you have to pay for perfection lol
Still a good one to keep on the thumb drive :)

Nice player. I judge players like this mainly for their ability to play internet radio streams, as I'm unlikely to carry large amounts of music on a portable thumb drive. In this case, I was slightly disappointed by what the site advertised and what the player could actually do. Using ver. 2.203 of the player, I couldn't load .pls playlists (had to convert all of mine to .m3u) and the player didn't seem to be able to play an AAC+ stream (Yggdrasil Radio). Just don't think they should promise more than they can deliver. For portable use, I'll stay with XMPlay plus plugins...it supports everything I need to do for listening to internet radio streams.

radio streams

Funny, my disappointment regarding Spider Player was that, like so many players, Spider Player loads each alternate stream in an internet radio url as a separate track, making a playlist of stations more or less unusable. I'll keep using IcyRadio for streams and Foobar2000 for local media.

Foobar blows everything else away IMHO - it's lightweight, it's portable, its default playlists use relative links, it can play just about anything and convert and rip and mass tag and it's skinnable and has tabbed playlists and on and on... :D

I couldn't load .pls playlists (had to convert all of mine to .m3u)
could you send one of those to "contact <at> spider-player <dot> com", please?
and the player didn't seem to be able to play an AAC+ stream (Yggdrasil Radio)
you have to install the MP4/AAC plugin in order to be able to play (or record) AAC+ streams
Spider Player loads each alternate stream in an internet radio url as a separate track, making a playlist of stations more or less unusable
Thanks for pointing this out! This will be made an option in the next version.

Spider Player added

Based on this test, I decided to go ahead and add Spider Player, especially since it was first suggested back in 2007 and has been a regularly updated discussion topic

How to extract:
1. Download "Basic" version and run setup file
2. During setup, choose "portable" installation and extract to a folder of your choice

Note that setup requires an internet connection as many program components are downloaded.
A portable build is available @ http://spider-player.com/download/other

It's a .zip package, does not require admin rights.
